Hi folks,
I have finally migrated over to TG2 Tech Preview after months of resisting its pull! I have a basic scene with;
1 x Planet
1 x imported heightfield
So I have got it looking ok, now I want to populate the scene with something, grass for example. I have played around with the populate function but I cannot render the population!
Im not 'uber' familiar with the node system but If someone explains to me how to correctly populate a scene I will probably be able to follow,
I have Googled this but cannot find anything, please help.
Thanks, ???
This PDF includes something on populations - http://forums.planetside.co.uk/index.php?topic=63
Thanks Calico now gonna give it a look,
im fairly computer literate, (degree in games art and design) but I cannot follow this, any other 'helps' any body know of?
Just something that is a little 'clearer' thanks anyway Calico,
:D
It would be really useful if you could give a clear description of your problem? You can't render the population you mention. You mean the image renders but the grass is not visible?
I presume you didn't set the translate-coordinates properly for your population, but that's just guessing of course.
Could you post a .tgd to show and explain what the problem is and the result you'd like to have?

Could you possibly explain the process you are using to try and generate and render populations.
It's a fairly straight forward process.
Select the objects tab at the top of the screen.
Click Add Object
Select Population.
The Flyout menu gives a number of choices. There are internal objects, (Disc, Grass Clump...etc...) and external objects that can be imported (LWO, OBJ and TGO)
To get something going easily.. select Grass Clump
The Population property pane is displayed at lower left.
Click the "preview instances" button then click Populate now.
The population is represented in the 3d preview as a group of white rectangular shapes.
If the position of the population is at the same point as your heightfield, Click the Terrain tab in the population properties pane and ensure that sit on terrain is checked.
That's the basics.. hit render to see the result....Don't forget that the default camera position is 1 Km off the ground.. you may need to lower it to get a better idea of what the population actually looks like....
Go to the render tab, set your render options and then click render image - wait till done !
Hope this helps a bit..
Rgds

Well,
Im looking for a 'ground up' explanation of how to populate a TG2 scene, I have played with it myself followed a few 'tutorials' and, just like you said, my grass isn't rendering? This thread was started to ask other users if they had (or had seen) a "Basic population" tutorial which explains everything you need to know about easily populating a scene.
As I said im new to TG2 and the features within it so as a starting point im looking at compiling a useful "Basic Guide" to the "advanced functions", so in future I dont have to stop what im doing and google the answer to a particular question.
Thanks, :'(
Well,
Red_planet just gave you a really useful short description on how to insert a population.
I'd say try it and if you still run in problems get back and post your example and/or .tgd so we can all sort this out for you.
There are plenty experienced people here willing to help you.
You can also take a look over here:

Or here:

Hi,
yeah "Red_Planet" posted that thread just as I did so what I posted wasn't particularly relevant, sorry!
I will take a look when I get home and let you know the results,
Thanks,
Phil
What you'll find is that we can help where we can, but you'll need to get your hands dirty. There are loads of examples on this site in TGD and TGC form (as in shared files), as well as loads of instructions and information about how to create populations. If you're having that much trouble, send your TGD and we'll try to assist by checking out what you've done.
