Title: Terrain Modification
Post by: darthvader on June 14, 2008, 12:57:37 AM
I have access to DEM files but they always seem too low of resolution, even at 10 meter resolution. Does anybody know where I could find a higher resolution DEM for mt st helen's in washington state? Also is there any way of adding errosion to DEM's like in  a program such as worldmachine? Thanks for any help you can give me.

I will be making the 3 meter St. Helens terrain previously available Ashundar available once again. It had not been added back due to an oversight. The full 3 meter resolution terrain is 8193x8193, so it takes a decent amount of RAM to use, but the detail is pretty spectacular for close-ups. For most shots though, at a greater distance from the crater, the 4097x4097 version is just fine.

As for eroding DEM's, you can definitely do that to "add detail" to a terrain, but remember that the results will not be accurate to the real world anymore. One approach many people do use which won't affect the terrain's accuracy is to run erosion only to generate flow, talus, and other texture maps to mask your surfaces with. This can add a lot to realism in some cases.

Check on Ashundar tomorrow and you should see the St. Helens files in their own special area of the Terrain section.
