Good news on the update Matt - more than welcome.
Is the memory leak you describe the same one as seen after 4 or 5 preview renders, or is this a different one?
Great news about the update, hopefully it should be out by the time I return from the Festy. I notice that the update mentons nothing about the reflection/softshadow bug link (http://forums.planetside.co.uk/index.php?topic=3699.0). Has this been addressed in this update?
Richard
Kevin, yes that's the same leak.
Richard, this hasn't been fixed yet.
Matt
Humm I just found this but heard of no update. when is it coming? cool that it is by the way, was way to many bugs for my taste /winks lol.....when can I sink my teeth into something new? next week? not sure when his Feisty is hahahahaha.

Here's the announcement itself. http://forums.planetside.co.uk/index.php?topic=4307.0
Looks like a good few of the problems are worked out, I'm very glad the missing buckets've been fixed.
@Planetside -
This looks like a good leap toward the finished product. I assume the Beta is now actually being worked on in its frozen features state.
Thanks for letting us know it's coming soon.
Calico,
We're working towards the Beta now, yes. There are still some new features in the pipeline that didn't make it into the Tech Preview 4 but will be the Beta.
Matt
I am very very happy to see the memory-leak, bucket error and object reloading bug all being solved ;D
For me these were, in a random order, the most annoying bugs so far.
I'm looking forward to see the difference in renderspeed and the new GI settings.
I'll see if I can make a nice benchmark-scene for this to check out :)
I hope the 4th TP will fulfil the many wishes and that it will also (re)gain the trust of a part of the customer-base.
I don't want to run into things too early, but it might also be useful if you or Oshyan writes a small description/explanation of the new features. For example the new GI-settings and the "subdiv cache". Especially the latter sounds nice but it doesn't really make sense to me (yet).
Is there anything you can say about the features which didn't make it yet to be included in the TP4?
And will sub-surfacescattering be included in the beta?
Martin
Thanks /smiles....
DT
Undo is probably the most significant feature that won't be in TP4.
The subdivision cache settings are pretty straightforward. They control how much total memory will be used by the subdivision cache (which is only a portion of the overall memory TG2 will use, but it's a fairly significant portion, depending on the scene). This in turn dictates how much memory is available *per thread*. So you simply divide the total size that you set by the number of threads you will be using, and you get a per-thread cache size. For example at 400MB (the default, I believe), with 4 threads (on a quad core CPU) you will have 100MB of available cache per thread.
Truth be told changing the size of the caches isn't going to be useful that often. Even using small caches doesn't seem to have a significant negative impact on render speed (and there's a 50MB per thread lower limit as well), so - as in the case of TG 0.9 in fact - using the default will be best in most cases.
- Oshyan
Thanks for jumping in Oshyan.
I'm not really into computerthings like cache etc.
What does this setting mean to me?
If I have a complex scene with many populations at VHQ and VHQ rendersettings.
Do I have to increase this cache or decrease it?
How do I use it, that's the primary question :)

Why is the subdivision cache management a completely manual affair that is down to the user alone? I would have thought that memory assignment pre-thread and the management and handling thereof would be part of the core program of TG2, but with user override where needed.
The problem that I can foresee with the manual approach is the handing off pre-machine/ node in farm scenarios where having to set the subdivision cache by hand for each machine/node on a large farm on a per-job basis would not be effective in time management/ human resources effectiveness for the farm managers.
Surely, in future there must be a way of TG2 and future versions handling this type of resource management in a more efficient, automatic fashion with (If not already present) mechanisms in place to prevent this system form taking more resources then are available both in terms of physical RAM and Virtual Memory, which would harm over all system performance and lead to system slow downs or even application freezing, neither of which is desirable.
Apart form these concerns I look forward to this next release. ;D
Regards to you.

That's exactly what is available now. It's just that previously you could not override the settings.
T-U, if you had a very complex scene you might want to increase the cache size to make it render faster. It might also avoid certain rendering errors in some cases, although this is just a guess on my part.

Guess Harvey jumped ship a little too soon huh? ;)
Humm Interesting there Cyber-Angel and I think I would have to agree with there on that score and since I am going to later this year start rendering farms, this could be a huge pain in the U Know where later for large operations, but maybe very cool in personal projects, so yes I agree bro that does or will need to be addressed later if not now so hope they remember that one /smiles.....
Hahah and Ya with a name like birdbrain err I mean Harvey Birdman hahaha just funning ya bro if ya still around, and he does have some valid concerns and points about PS, just not to good at getting them out right was all.
Anyway Hes part of that Rendus.com Crowd with all the arrogant French people on it lolo, ROTFL Dang I love the French they so funny sometimes ROTFL. Haha don't matter how good ones art is, they will find a way to tell you it is crap, so beware posting there, ROTFL, I do it for fun myself as I love them Frenchies talking hahahahahaha. Hope he does OK, hes a good egg really and has good insights into many things and a fantastic artist, so I am sure he will do OK.
DT
I'm really looking forward to the new release.
Best news I've heard in a long time.

Who is the "He" you are referring to as being part of the "Rendus Crowd"? I've never seen Dave over there?
Hahaha No Harvey and hes a very good artist and like him allot, I was just kidding around about that website, they are very good TGD2ers and awesome art from Vue as well, and just about every one of them is amazing, you have to be to stand the heat on that site, not like Rendo, or eyefetch where people blow smoke up your ___ to get ratings and so on. But not for the Squeamish either hahaha ROTFL. And he did have very valid issues, anyway time to put this to bed and get on with the next build and hope for many less bugs then the one they did before /smiles........
I just wish the modeling aspect of all this would get on the board, and with my luck that will be 2-3 years from niow and I can't wait that long for TGD3 so not sure where I will end up myself yet, we see, as I have been an ardent fan of Planet Side for many years and would like to keep it that way if PS will let us /winks... as it is up to them to make or break this wonderful product, so if better software comes along then that is where the real artists will go ya know winks, better brushes, and canvass and we are all off to get better tools.
Simple math, 2+2=4 and not 5 or 3 or 6, but 4. If they want to keep us, they better listen to us much closer the end user artist I mean /winks, Ergo us.
DT
Looking forward to the new release, PS. :)
I guess the reinstating of multi-threading for the 3D Preview didn't make it back-in for this one, or am I just not seeing it?
@DT - I know you know, but it's not TGD2 - it's TG2 :-*
I think from now on whenever anyone sees DT not use TG2 they should make a concious effort to remind him what it should be. :P
As an aside, will we ever go back to just calling it Terragen?

Looking forward to the update.
I am the owner of rendus3d and I am happy to see that people are here to just tell the truth, not to congrat their friends.
Everybody can post images on it, but everybody can also tell what they think about. And for almost 99%, nobody is pretentious enought to appoint himself artist.
But back to the discussion, the new update has really a lot of capabilities to help you making beautiful things.
Hey guys, please don't engage in personal attacks on this forum. If you are fighting amongst yourselves, please try to do it elsewhere.
Things got a little personal in Harvey's "crooked" topic also, but I didn't feel it was appropriate to curb that discussion because it had started with a criticism aimed at Planetside. But the same applies there too.
Thanks.
Matt
Hahaha well as I said I really do love the French. They have made lots of contributions for many centuries in the world. So when I said they were Arrogant I was saying that lovingly. But hay there is a good example of what some people do in rendus. but it is a good site. Hahah Seth said that to me the first time I posted there so I was wondering when he would pop up /smiles......He and one other said I should delete my work, hahahaha...
As for modeling, humm, well in the next Month or so my partner and I will be selling Models I have made on Rendo and many other media websites for Artists. I was buying some models for a while to see what the competition was doing to see what they were doing for the money they were charging. So while I was at it I was using them, no biggie. But soon Rendus can even come buy some of my models, or not since some think they are chit ROTF. Not that I feel I have to defend myself brother. But it is all good, and I am glad you got that off your chest, so now we can all move on /winks....Anyway some of the models I posted I did make and I guess you couldn't tell the differences hahah good /smile.
Hay brother Christianfly, cool you put together a nice web site bro, and I really was kidding bout the French Arrogant thing mostly, but as you can see sometimes dead on though even so....
To close this in my mind I just want to say. There is a very big difference between Constructive Criticism and just flat out putting people down to make yourself feel better. Whenever I post comments on other peoples art, I always try and give a push toward either tutorials that can help, or ideas that may help them. I never say there work is Chit as that is subjective and we all know that. Anyway I think most understand what I am trying to say. Christianfly you have a wonderful website and never said otherwise bro /smiles.....just some on that site could be a bit more diplomatic I feel is all.
Anyway I agree this is getting old and was never meant to get out of hand, and sorry I said anything, thought they could take it like they give it, guess not ROTRFL.
Hay I ain't perfect ya know /winks.....Who is?
DT
Matt, fully agree ;)
-just a rockin and a rollin!!!
Going to test today... ;D

Cheers for the update. Downloaded now. Will try it asap.
I must say here that I do not find 'That Rendus.com Crowd' to be arrogant/hostile/overly critical in the slightest. I signed up there some time ago and everyone I've come across has appeared more than welcoming and glad to talk shop, which is, after all, why we're here in the first place, isn't it? Despite the language barrier.
I do suggest you word your posts a little more carefully in a public forum, DeathTwister, as I for one found your post more offensive(skirting on rascist) than any post I've been subjected to, as you would have it, on Rendus3D.
There are really good examples on proper manners and what 'some people do' everywhere on the internet, not just Rendus3D, especially much closer to home.
I won't post back and forward, keeping it going tennis style, about this. Just airing my feelings on respect and manners, is all.
dandelO.
HA ha OK one more time into the breach I go /winks,
Oh so very sorry no rascism I promise and I am half French. As I said I love the French very much if you read my posts, and have the utmost respect for them. But on Rendus they can be what I said at times. Anyway meant no disrespect, maybe one of those Jokes that was in poor taste, but not meant to offend people. Anyway on to the next round of bug reports it looks like even before I can get mine in people are having issues.
And there are allot of people that would disagree with you about rendus and I am very happy you are doing well there. But I know many that were not and people on rendus really hurt some of my friends with there remarks, so I was just saying sometimes and they were just a few, the French can be arrogant, I know I am French hahahaha lolol ROTFL, thought you all knew that, I am French, a little English and allot of Druid in me.
I like the Druid and the French part ALLOT and can leave the English I think as they to stuffy hahahahahaha, LOLOLOL, ya well it is a joke son get over it /winks.... OK this my last post on this one, tear me up if ya want and yep, should have kept my mouth shut, but hay I thought it was kinda funny at the time and was trying to help defuse another situation, but looks like I made it worse, Oh well, I love ya all anywayz /hugs......
Anyway Christionfly did a bang up job on it building it, and I like posting on it, so I good, as I said before I get a kick out of it, not that I was upset about it /smiles....
PS: why do you think I got the handle DeathTwister ROTFL other peeps gave it to me lololol.
PPS: I love all races and all peoples and customs with EQUALITY bar none. To me that is one of the spices in life. But that don't mean I won't make cracks in loving fun here and there. I love and hate everyone with Equality my friends, and I judge people by there own merrets, not mine. Most people will show there true colors pretty quickly if you set the stage right. OK I done have fun all, and C Ya A Round.......

Does anyone use the 3D preview to check the look? I know I don't, just using one of the render node setups with optimised settings.
i prefer using the 3d preview over the nodes. lets me get a much better feel for where things are without wasting render times double checking. gives a good idea of what the actual render would be near, allowing to to fiddle settings or placement of things.
