Title: Another Meadow *updated*
Post by: RArcher on July 14, 2008, 11:52:37 AM
Trying to get a soft photographic feel to this one.  Thanks for the depth mask tutorial Martin, was very helpful for this sort of thing.  Big thanks to Lightning for the fantastic trees and grass, would be nothing to see here without the vegetation.

Any suggestions to make this better?

Pretty work even if I find the sky too white too luminous!

Well I think the bright white sky is just fine and works well for the effect you're looking for!
The lighting, composition and models are very good. In overall great work so far.

However, I've 2 suggestions for improvement:

First, to make the grasses look better and to get the more photographic look you might consider rendering it with higher AA settings and maybe also up the detail setting a bit.
I don't know which GI settings you use, if you didn't render it with at least GI 2/2 you should definitely do it. But as far as I know you, you probably have done that ;D

Second, the tree on the left is a great model, however I'm not fond of the bark-texture. It's scale is way too big. I think a bark with smaller texture scales will look much much better.
You might try using these I've posted a while ago:

If you like the results I can send you the full-res versions of the textures.

Hope this helps so far.

Thanks for the comments!

Martin:

I rendered this one at:

Detail:  0.8
AA: 16
GI: 2/2
GI Blur: 10
Supersample prepass

Perhaps the 0.8 detail is not enough for the grass.  I will give your bark a try and see how it looks, thanks!

Hmm.... That's odd. I used to render with 0.8 detail on everything before and your AA should be high enough.

Anyway.... I like the image. I only think the grass could use a litte more variation in the colors.

I love the lighting on the trees in the distance. The foreground tree is nice as well. I agree there's something slightly off with the bark texture (although it looks very good) - it may well be a scale issue. But overall a great looking image. The "overbright" sky goes with the bright, "dreamy" quality of the rest of the image IMO.

Hey RArcher beautiful image thanks for using my plants ;)!
with the grass try not using all of the same species this looks like the highland grass pack try mixing it with my high res grass and this grass model looks realy nice mixed with klases grass!

the tree however i need to work on i am currently putting together a poppy pack for the comunity then im going to rework the common ash hopefully im just full of the flue at the moment and for some reason i can use the family desktop but cant stay on the pc in my room for more than 10mins because i get a splitting headache  ::)

Here is the updated finished version (at least for the time being).  Toned down the brightness quite a bit, added a few more layers of grass, a few flowers, re-did the rocks entirely and fixed up the tree bark somewhat.  Thanks for the suggestions and comments!

Great update. The variation in the grass add a lot more realism. I like the DOF, but maybe it is a little to much as seth93 already said.

I actually preferred the brightness of the first one, more like a camera shot for an early morning shot, the sky would pretty much just me white, especially with no clouds. I was doing some research in london yesterday and the sky was pretty much like that in every one. thirded on the blur effect though, it's a bit too much.
