Title: Multitude of sins...
Post by: choronr on July 24, 2008, 07:10:57 PM
One of the things I'm learning about is: you could hide a multitude of sins with Terragen 0.09; with TG2, you cannot!

LOL - I have often said that low resolution hides a multitude of sins.     :D

Couldn't have said it better.  I'll do a TG2 pre-render at 400x300 or so with high detail before the final, and it will look fantastic.  Then I'll do a larger 1024x768 render, wait the day or two, then open the screen to find a "marginal" image  :(

The only way I've found to overcome this (I've done this many times as well) is to try to crop-check it before the final render by using a large size and scrutinizing each crop.  But, then the crop usually looks richer than the final.  It's sort of a challenge at times.  What is really baffling is when the preview screen looks better than my final.  Sheesh.   ;D

I always make croprenders at the target size and detail to check my final outcome. I also do it during the design of the scene, which seems quite logical to me.

I think Terragen 2 needs 'noise reduction.

It in fact has noise reduction what with all the adjustments...You only need the registered ver. to get the High AA and Detail setting that take advantage of it.. ...

I have started a re-render increasing both AA and 120 Atmo samples for my current picture ...we'll see if there is any improvement; thanks Bobby and Seth. And, I do have the registered version - alpha 5 which works very well. Yet, having an ant-noise setting in the renderer settings could be a good idea setting the optimum choices for the composition. This way there may be no guess work. I'll post the comparisons when completed.

I've made two renders; the original 'Return' and the second 'Return II' which employed an increased AA and 120 Atmo samples. The second render took about 5 hours longer. The original too 1 hour, 19 minutes. Thanks again to all of you for these reminders. The changes make the most significant appearance in the vegetation; and, there is somewhat softness to the rest of the image.

Thanks to: Markal for the terrain; jcinbama for the Eucalyptus trees; Xfrog for the fir trees; and, to a friend for the airship who will remain anonymous.

Ooooops; I could not post both pictures due to the file size limit; so, here is the picture with high AA and Atmo settings.

ReturnII is mos def a better render all around...like you said the veg benefits the most but it's evidenced in all the features if you look closley...great pic and thanx for the compare example.. ...
