Title: Noob question about clouds
Post by: csoro on August 05, 2008, 06:25:29 PM
Hey I'm trying to make some realistic clouds and it's not quite working out so well as you can see here...

Can someone tell me how I can get that whispy, feathery effect on the clouds, I can't figure out how to do it for the life of me.

I'm still learning; but, I've had luck with the following:
Main
•   Cumulus. 3D Volumetric
•   Cloud altitude 2115 (or, to suit)
•   Cloud depth 1024 (or thicker)
•   Edge sharpness 100
•   Cloud density 0.00225 (increase for more clouds)
•   Coverage adjust 0
•   Cloud colour 0.35
•   Scattering colour 0.5
Lighting
•   Light propagation 2
•   Light propagation mix 0.125
•   Fake internal scattering 0.25
•   Enviro light 1
•   Enviro light tint 1
Tweaks
•   Ambient 0
•   Fake dark power 0.9875
•   Fake dark sharpness 10
•   'check' improved lighting model
•   Base wispiness 0
•   Base softness 0
•   Coverage gamma 0.9
Quality
•   Rendering model 3D (volumetric)
•   Quality 6.88104
•   Number of samples 438
•   Sample jitter 1
Pattern
•   Seed number 42525
•   Feature scale 500
•   Lead in scale 20000
•   Smallest scale 10
•   Noise octaves 13

Experimentation is the only way you're going to find the results you are looking for.

Phylloxera did a pretty good job and shared it with us in the cloud library - http://forums.planetside.co.uk/index.php?topic=3691.msg38215#msg38215

Actually, I quite like those clouds you've got there (and others like them). I have tried to make clouds look unnatural but not succeded in making anything like these! :P

How do you do it?  :D

Download the clip file from the Cloud Library in the File Sharing section and see how he did it.   ;D

Sorry, I mean csoro. I like the unnatural quality and sharp edges.

I tried not to suck, haha.

But seriously, I'm kicking myself now because I didn't save the file but I do believe I had some of these following settings:

Edge sharpness-5
Cloud density-15
Coverage adjust-0
Cloud color-.35
Scattering color-.5
'checked' flatter base
--------Density shader------------------------
Feature scale-500
Lead-in scale-13000?
Noise flavor-Perlin Billows

I made that long before I found this place so if I ever get anything cool like that I'll make sure to share it with you all.  I appreciate your help a lot.  I have to say, I've been on other forums and this is by far the friendliest and most inviting of them all.

Aha! The parameter I was looking for was 'cloud density' - setting it high makes the clouds look dense.

Kind of obvious now that I realise...  ;D

Anyway, thanks!

Probably just as obvious as the fact that I have to turn down the edge sharpness to get a feathery effect, haha.
