Post by: cyphyr on September 04, 2008, 11:45:17 AM
Old English Oak Tree for your rendering pleasure, thought it was time I gave something back to the community.

Old English Oak Tree (Quercus robur) (http://www.mediafire.com/?sharekey=8a43f1f8c4f2fbe4ab1eab3e9fa335ca62e99311b421e6af)

Textures included but please let me know if the path issue is working, should be but I have no real way of checking.

Enjoy

Richard

Oh the 2m (1m radius) beach ball was left behind by somebody but it gives a good idea of scale.
Grasses by Lightning and railings by me (both not included)

Really great,thank you very much!

The birch trees are terrific too, thank you again.Would have replied over there,
but if i press the reply button i just get to a blank page, don't know what that
is,so that's why i say thanks here.

Wow.  This is awesome.

What are the limitations - non-commercial only?

There's no real limitations on using these files, only if you do use them commercially I would like a credit and you cant re-distribute them. Do you think there should be a "Terms of Use" in there?

Any work we do should have something like that.

I understand about the credit.  Just wondering.

Thanks mate, this is something I've been wanting to do for over a year now, but its taken that long to work out the feel of the software. I didn't realize how complex the process of "just" modeling a tree was going to be :). I'm using Lightwave and XSI. I've used Lightwave for donkeys years, really familar with it and I'm just starting fiddling about with XSI. The XSI guys were giving away a copy of their software if you entered a competition earlier this year and there's a great little plugin called TGen (also free) that works like a stripped down Xfrog.
Thanks for your offer of help, much apriciated, hehe maybe we could get a modeler from every continent and cover all plant lilfe lol
Best wishes
Richard

Thanks cyphyr, just downloaded it. However TG2 is looking two image files:
oak_leaves.bmp and bark01S.jpg and they are not with the download.

The only image files in the .rar file are:
bark01L.jpg
barkbump2.jpg
OakSprig.bmp
OakSprigMask.bmp

Do any of these replace the two TG2 is looking for?

Thanks again.

Thanks for the heads up Sunshine, Yes they do replace the missing files but I'm re-uploading the files as I write and they should be there in half an hour. Let me know if its all working:)

I have been playing with your oaktree and came up with some
adjustments and wanted to know what you think about it.
Hope you don't mind.

Oooh.  jmeyer, would you mind telling me how you did this - through a 3D modeling program?

Good work J meyer, I'd make the displacements a little less but thats personal taist. I would re-download the model though as I must have uploaded the wrong model initially. The one up there at the moment is about 60mb and looks like the image at the top of this thread. I trhink I uyploaded an earlier version, sorry for the confusion.

Glad you like it. ;D
I'm redownloading right now,thanks.
It's quite easy and all done in TG:i simply connected two image map
shaders (one for color, one for displacement) to the default shader
of the trunk set the size to something like 0.5 or 0.25 and checked
the repeat features.
I made another version with a slightly more blurrred version of the bark
pic and a little less displacement earlier, but since that required some
outside work i decided to show the above one. ;)

Richard ,do you think it'd be possible to separate the trunk part from the
rest of the model,so one could maybe sculpt it or add some sculpted roots
and then combine it again with the branches or use two models?

Hi j mayer
Firstly you'll see that the new tree you've just downloaded has much better mapping. You should not need to click the repeat check boxes as this has no effect on UV mapping. You can of course use any texture you like. You might want to start with a simple checkerboard pattern and get your scale from that and then substitute in your bark texture.
The models are released as TGO's at the moment (I may release OBJ's later) and these cannot be edited in any external app, however the Tgo's do have seperate texture channels for T
trunk, root, branches etc so you could indeed use different displacement/texture maps on each channel.
Happy rendering
Richard

Yes indeed much better mapping now.
I just described what i had done,calico asked.And it seems it worked,but i'll
try it with another texture later to see exactly, good idea btw.
Of course i know tgos can't be edited in other apps, what i meant was :would
it be technically possible to separate the trunk of a tree, made with Tgen,to
alter it with ZBrush, for example, and then recombine the branches and the
trunk in XSI or to combine the 2 models (the trunk and the branches) in
TG so they are matching. That way one could sculpt a high res gnarled trunk
and could make use of generated branches, twigs and leaves.Doing twigs
and leaves  manually would be somewhat painful you know.
Hope i have been clearer this time.
Anyway, thank you again for your awesome trees,so far the best i know of!

Like jmeyer said...this sounds like it would be cool, if possible.

This model looks superb.

While loading i get an error message about not being able to locate 'OakSprig2'. It's an image file that's part of the 'OakLeaves2' shader but I can't find it in the downloaded file.
