Title: Rocks, water and mist
Post by: matrix2003 on September 15, 2008, 06:32:53 PM
Rendered, saved as an .EXR, ran through Photomatrix and PS color adjusted.

Cool.  Nice and crisp.  Good color.

The detail in the water is great. A lot of renders just seem to have whatever random churning that Terragen threw up when it created the water shader, looks like you've put some nice work into it here.

Looks cold, brrrrr, early morning chill way up north, Iceland or Greenland maybe ?
Great work, love the unbelievably blue sky (the sort of sky that people say is unbelievable not that is not believable ... if you know what I mean lol )

Dunno if you want to hear it, but I think you gave away some with this scene. The way it is at the moment, I don't think it's looking good as a whole (apart from the water itself and the cloud), and here is why:

- the saturation is exaggerated. It's particularly noticable in the blue of the sky
- It looks like you have also made excessive use of the shadow and highlight tool in PS or something similar. I can tell from the glow in the blue that matches the outline of the mountain.
- one would expect a little more blur in the distance, but the outline of the mountains is too sharp
- the use of fake stones that pop out of the water: there are too many of them in the distance, so that towards the horizon, they look like a solid terrain. I suggest the use of a distance shader to blend them out when far away. It would also be advantegeous if they had slightly varying surfaces.

The good news is, that you can improve on all of this with only very minor modifications to the scene and in PW.

Cheers,
Frank

I like most of Frank's observations and suggestions, but as far as the saturation - it's exaggerated, but I think this is what makes this unique and the reason it pops so well for me.

Looks fantastic! :)
How did you do the rocks? I'm just getting started with TG2 ;)

Pretty work, beautiful atmosphere. I like much the texture of the mountain behind. I would have seen a calmer water well perhaps (question of taste)

Thanks to all!  Yeah Frank the POP on this is the HDR, which is a bit too saturated and lends to a cartoony sky.
Was going more for water realism and sacrificed the sky.
The clouds get very grainy to the far left which is a remnant from Photomatrix as well.

I saw that Calico had run an .exr cloud through Photomatrix  - and I just had to try!   ::)

About the saturation in the "mountain", well... I really don't see it as a mountain, i think one of the reasons for its lack in blurriness is that it's not a mountain at all, maybe a "mid high" hill and it's more near than one should expect. See a pic of the Sugar Loaf hill at Rio de Janeiro for an idea:

That formation seems to be lower than this one, and it's in the tropics where we should expect waaay more mist...

About the scene itself?!? I think it's AWESOME!!!!!!!
