Title: Artefacts
Post by: nem on September 18, 2008, 12:46:46 PM
Hi All,

In the image here below I get some kind of "perspective line artefacts" (I marked them with the two red boxes at the bottom). Is this a bug, or is there a way to avoid this sort of artefacts?
Second thing, less important, the moon on the background is shining through the cumulus cloud (the red box on the left-center): increasing the density of the clouds doesn't resolve well the problem: instead, I get thick dark cloud, with the mood still shining through. I know that this could be easily corrected in post-production, but I would like to know if there is a way to fix the problem from within Terragen.

Thanks a lot!!

The fractal artefacts on the water surface can sometimes be removed by offsetting the lake object to one side. The lines usually radiate from the centre of the lake so shifting to one side can reduce/remove this effect. Hope this helps.

Kevin's suggestion may help if you are using the Lake object. I am currently testing some changes to the renderer which may reduce that problem in the future.

The incorrect transparency of the clouds is caused by an optimisation which limits how much opacity is calculated in order to reduce render times, but sometimes it shows problems. I don't know of a way that you could fix this. I need to do more work on it.

Kevin,
Thanks for your feedback. I have changed the "Centre" values on the "Transform" tab (I hope you were referring to this) but the result is the same. :(
Furthermore, if you look at the image I posted, you'll notice that the artifact lines seem to propagate from different points...
Any other suggestions?

Best,
Nem

I usually use a TG plane object for water instead of a default lake object, which, I imagine, has subdivisions like the disk object. These are what I think causes these lines. You can't alter the number of subdivisions in a lake object so, try a plane, I say.
