Title: exr files srgb or linear colour space?
Post by: chris_x422 on October 17, 2008, 07:40:13 AM
Hi,

I've just been asked by our compositor if the exr files rendered from terragen are linear or srgb.
It looks like we are have a few gamma issues.

Thanks

Chris

The EXR files are linear.

Gamma correction, contrast and soft clipping are only applied the 8-bit files (BMP, SGI, TIF), but the EXR output is linear.

I know a bit about gamma and colour spaces, so if there's anything I can help with just ask.

Thanks Matt,

I was pretty sure that they were, but I can now confirm that to our compositors.

I think their problems stem from poor monitor calibration.

Thanks again.

The default gamma and contrast in TG will make TG's 8-bit display look darker and more constrasted than the linear EXRs after they are properly displayed in the compositor. You might want to disable contrast (possibly also soft clip) and make sure gamma is at 2.2 to avoid surprises.
