Title: Distance Shader not working with 3D Clouds properly
Post by: Njen on January 16, 2007, 04:17:48 PM
1. Add a Low-level: Cumulus (3D /Volumetric) cloud layer.
2. Create a Distance Shader and pipe it into the Blending Shader input of the Cumulus' Density Fractal node.
2a. Pipe the camera into the Distance Shader. [Edit]: for got this one :)
3. Invert the blendshader in the Cumulus' Density Fractal node (and turn on Blend by Shader).
4. In the Distance Shader, set the Far Distance to 20,000 and the Near Distance to 19,000
5. Move the camera to roughly 2.2km from the surface, the clouds should be there.
6. Now move ever closer to the surface, until you are roughly 1.4km from the surface.

Result: the clouds disappear.

Cheers.

This problem should be fixed in the latest update for the Technology Preview released last week. Please verify if you get a chance.

Hi Guys,

I'm digging up old threads tonight because I keep running into (probably silly) problems.

I can't get the distance-shader to work with clouds at all.
I have masked populations and surfaces with distance shaders succesfully within the same scene, but applying a distance shader to clouds seems not to work.
This is the way I connect the nodes...
Nothing happens, the clouds stay where they are without masking.
What am I doing wrong?
Thanks in advance for your time.

Martin

Did you check "Blend by shader"?
(Sounds stupid, but I make that mistake all the time)

Yes I did, forget to mention that, sorry :)

Ok. Then maybe Coverage adjust (in the cloud layer) is the culprit?

Hey that's great, it works :)
I had to adjust the coverage adjust in the cloud-node self, not in the cloudfractal-node. That worked!
Thanks a bunch!  :-* ;) lol

Aaaaaarrrrrrgggggghhhhhhhhh! I've been trying to get this to work for weeks!

Followed tutorials.
Fiddled with sliders
Disconnected and reconnected all the nodes.
Followed tutorial again from scratch.
Shouted at monitor.
Followed tutorial again from scratch.
Shouted at the hamster.
Searched the forums and........

Aaaarrrrgh! I forgot to check the Blend by Shader box.......Doh!
