Hi there,
a WIP based on my cumulus pack. I'm pretty satisfied already, but have to continue to work on the main cloud primarily.
By the way, this photograph was the inspiration for the scene: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/a7/Anvil_shaped_cumulus_panorama_edit.jpg
... not yet quite spot on for 100% realism, but getting there ;-)
Cheers,
Frank
This is looking good. I'll be keeping my eye on this one. Great sense of scale here too.
matte painting looking ^^
very impressive WIP !
This is very good. I especially like how sharpness plays with softness in this image. Really cool :)
Good replication of the photograph, it's a great start and I like where it's heading. I'm jealous of your new "thunderbolt" computer. ;D
Great start and with a computer like that it will be there in no time.
This is gold, keep it up
Inspirational indeed. Cloud wizardry.
John
I'm awestruck ...You've opened a new plateau in TG2!
Awesome work, keep'm coming :)
Martin
OMG! :o
If I might add my uneducated 2ยข worth, the light distribution is about all you lack, Frank.
colour me green...i envy your machine...fabulous work here and it looks like I might just be able to afford you've kept it so reasonable...keep up the great work.. ...
Thank you guys!!!
Here's an update. I figured out the secret for the correct lighting now, and for mixing soft and rough parts. Although in this particular render, I haven't noticed it was over exposed, so I had to consult good old openexr to rescue a little bit. Next iteration on this channel, soon.
Frank
Wow, this is perfect. How in the world did you get this lighting? Finish up that ground work and this should be one of the most incredible CG images I've ever seen.
The upper cloud is fantastic. On the lower cloud, the base (compared to the original photo) is too dark and too grey - it's bluish in the original. But hey, I'm sure you'll figure out how to do it ;)
Cool cool cool, but there's still more work to do ;)
Martin
Hi Frank,
I like the progress you are making with this scene. You probably know this already but the original ref photo has the upper cloud reaching the terrain (background), this is what makes the mood ominous in the ref photo. If you can add that to your scene you will have completed the upper part. The new lighting works a treat on the clouds.
"Tuned to the channel".
Saurav
Nice improvements. More detail and more realistic.
Looks like you are going to have one nice Super Cell going on there. ;D
:o WOW...that's nice :o
Another update. I think I've got the sky part now as close as it (I) can get with TG2.
I started working on the ground as well, but not finished with that yet.
Frank
I'm speechless. This is absolutely photorealistic!!
Now that's something. Very impressive!
Edit: The first image got me thinking..if you put those clouds lower and make it a bit more grey it might be a supervolcano erupting. Yellowstone or something similiar

go for it, I'd like to see that.
Cheers,
Frank
Clouds look perfect, you have them looking photo realistic as you can get out of TG2. The terrain could use a bit more details in my opinion, perhaps some erosion effects?
Stunning work, Frank!
Wholly molly! This is one of the best CG cloud scenes I've ever seen! :o
The upper level cirrus need some work and the edges of the foreground cumulous could be improved a bit more, but you could leave it as is and have one of the best cloud scenes ever! The upper level matured anvil of the structure is nearly as perfect as it gets.
Wow...
very very good one Oo
Very good. The sky looks even better now.
The trees look like some aren't touching the ground. Is this a mirage? Desert, you know...
Superb work so far Frank. Think you've nailed it down very good!
Can't think of any improvements for the lighting, turned out very well!
Are you going to post another update with some more terrain texturing to make it a "complete" picture or do you leave it as is?
Martin
I see now what I thought previously was impossible ...this one raises by pulse rate - fantastic creativity Frank!
