Title: Mellow Morning - Finished :)
Post by: Tangled-Universe on January 20, 2009, 06:10:18 AM
The name of a drink at the coffeebar in the university I work...thought it might be somewhat suitable for this image.

The grasses are from Klas. 10.005.720 instances! That's no typo!
Trees from Xfrog Europe 2.
Rendersettings: 0.85, AA 8, GI 1/1 + SS-prepass.
Rendertime: < 3h!
No postwork!

Will improve this one further with an extra tree-species and also denser vegetation in the distance.
Also think of giving the fog a bit more glow, but I think it's almost right. I shall see.
Depends also on what you guys think ;)

Thanks for stopping by again.

Martin

I like the lighting on the trees.

I'm glad you like the lighting on the trees because that was the most challenging part of this image and also the most fun.

I've found that increasing the diffuse color from 0.5 to >0.5 along with some translucency gives better results than rather increasing translucency alone.

Thanks Franck,

I'll see what I can do about it without losing the lighting or make it unnaturally bright.

oh, and i was expecting another render ;)

I really like the mood and atmosphere.  One thing that does stick out for me is that the four trees you can see are all clearly the same tree model.  Perhaps play around with the rotation so they look a little different.

Yes you're right. I already mentioned I'm planning to add another extra species. Don't know if you've read that info ;)

Though this is a beautiful model the problem is that it is very symmetrical and thus rotating doesn't have that much effect. The population is randomnly rotated in the whole range of 360 degrees.
I had the same critique once before using this model and the answer is thus the same: because of the reason stated above I can't help it :)

So the ultimate solution would be to use another model, but I think using a bit more size variation (= near zero now) and introducing another species will break up the "pattern" a lot :) I really like this model so I definitely will keep it.

Very nice start, Martin. I have two recommendations:
1 - I think the sun disc is too big. Half the size, and it will still be big, but will integrate with the scene much better
2 - I thought it would be nice to add some broken old wooden fence somewhere in the mid-ground, and maybe some other stuff that could belong there, like maybe a hay fork or a cattle watering tank or something along those lines...

Cheers,
Frank

Thanks Frank,

I agree with both recommendations. The sun is a bit to the left and you can already see some lens distortion on its shape...making a bit smaller might first look better and maybe also decrease the distorted look, although it is not that worse.

I'd go for a wooden fence then. However, I should check where to find such a model. Maybe you already know?

A very beautiful render. I really love the lighting.
I'd rather only move the sun a bit more to the right, for the composition drags my eyes to the left and out of the image.
Keep on!

An excellent start, the scene does need an object to focus though, as Frank explained. Other than that maybe increase GI to see a bit more of the foreground.
The rest including the composition and colours are looking great as they are.

Thank you Volker.
I agree with you that the sun could be moved a little further to the right. I'll look how far I want to move it, because on the other hand the composition is quite balanced, although there isn't a real focus then.
I might introduce something new to focus on maybe :)

Thanks Saurav,

Increasing GI will probably destroy the contrasts and lighting on the trees, so I'll have to be careful with adjusting it. I'll try for sure.

Tonight after work I'll have some time to get on with this. Hope to post an update within 24h :)

Haha, you impatient man you are! ;)
I'm working on it and as usual I'm paying too much attention to details :p
I've decreased the disc size of the sun, but didn't move it to the right, still not sure of it.
I also added 2 more groundcover-populations and another tree-population.
Further I adjusted the fog, made it slightly less dense and more warpy and the atmosphere is a little bit more bluish near the top of the image.

I'm also busy with a fence, found a suitable model but it is already posted in .tgo-format and I want to adjust it in a 3rd party program.
I guess that's just end of story huh?

Haha, ok guys :) thanks for the support ;)

But serious, I REALLY need your support now:

I've been trying to render my updated scene 3 times now and my computer completely freezes during rendering. No button responds, the mouse doesn't respond. Simply NOTHING responds. These crashes occure more often and strangely enough it is in periods. So a couple of days with many freezes/crashes and then a couple of weeks without.
When it freezes when playing an mp3 or video for example the sound hangs.

Does anybody have an idea what might be the cause? Last time (about 3 weeks ago) I thought it were conflicting drivers from an old soundcard I used and also videocard-drivers. I then deleted all the drivers and codecs and reinstalled only the necessary ones. After that I had no computerfreezes anymore so I thought that was the definitive solution.
Apparently it is not :(
So anybody have a clue?

Thanks in advance,

Martin

Check the Open Discussion forum, but I thought of something else I've seen do this - a hard-drive going out.  If it isn't a software / driver / OS issue, it's hardware.  Well, duh.  What I mean is that if you are sure you did nothing to change something on your computer (when this started) that required new software (even a new driver) or you've done no installations of something like a new AV or something like that, then I'd say look at your hardware.  It could be something is just slowly choking.  I believe I even had a power supply act like that once - things were getting too hot.

That might be it!  Is your CPU getting too hot?

My PC died a few days ago - windows would no longer boot.  It was the 4th time I've had to reinstall windows in a year.  I later deduced it was likely the hard drive all along - its a Western Digital 150GB (unsure of the exact model at this time).  I am fed up with this POS!

Anyway, my point is - I bought a new PC!  Its a core i7 (2.65Ghz), with 3GB RAM, Windows Vista 64 Bit, nearly loaded!  Amazingly, it was only $1250 US at Best Buy.  So others may want to look into doing this as well.  Compared to my Quad Core 2.4 GHz, it renders images 30% faster, if not 50% faster (at least from the benchmark test).  Its also super silent and super stable.  Despite it having Vista, its definitely worth it.

"Wunderbar" would be the correct spelling for this German word. I should be able to tell :D
I'm always wondering how this particular word became such an "Exportschlager" (popular export) in the US and maybe also other English speaking countries..
Kindergarten, Rucksack, Angst, ... what else? :-D

Cheers,
Frank

Martin, sorry to hear that. Troubleshooting unpredictable behaviour is difficult. However, if it runs fine for weeks, and then out of a sudden produces many crashes in a row, I would really suspect a connection to room temperature, which affects the cooling. Probably usually, the environmental temp is slightly below a problematic point, whereas when it's cold outside, you up the heater a little too much. That of course can only be a problem if some PC cooling element is not working as expected.
Recently, I was wondering about crashes on my old PC, too. I found that dust had completely blocked the airflow from the CPU cooler, and that the CPU fan could no longer turn faster than ~1000rpm - due to dust and probably weary material too. A good cleansing and a new CPU fan solved the problem. I'm not saying this is your problem too, but you may want to check it out. Is your system overclocked somehow?

Cheers,
Frank

Agree about the lighting on the trees. That works very well. Good sky colours. Maybe the sun is a little overpowering within the whole image.

Thanks guys :)

I've checked dust (do that from time to time as well) and temperatures and they're really fine.
I haven't had any crashes today (knocks on wood), but also didn't do any TG.
So I'll start a render now for the night and see if it will crash again.

Strangely enough, problems seem te be over...(for the time being :-\)
So I managed to render an update yesterday.

Rendersize is quite large so I had to post it at deviantart so I can link it here.
Size is 2585x1100 and rendered at detail 1, AA 10, GI 1/1 with SS-prepass and took 10,5 hours.

The ground could be somewhat brighter but I quite like this one so far.

Here's the link:

The translucency in the leaves is very realistic, but the area around sun looks a bit oversaturated.

Agreed, everything's fine. Sun looks like an atomic explosion to me though. Makes it a bit less mellow ;D

Thanks!

I could reduce the density of the hazes, but nothing more. The bloom also adds to the saturation but is really necessary for the translucency and to avoid a crappy looking sun.

Absolutely, though it is not really my principle ;D

It definitely improved I think, what do you guys think?
I can make the same effect in TG quite easily. After all I tend to be a purist ;D

Unless I find a very nice metal fence model I won't update this image anymore :)
I will post the original resolution later, somewhere. 3525x1500 ;D and it took "just" 30 hours to render @ detail 1, AA10, GI 1/1 with SS-prepass.
I hope you enjoy this as much as I did creating it :)

I'm quite happy with this one and indeed worth the waiting. You should really take a look at the original resolution next time you're on msn ;) Personally I especially like the lighting on the tall tree on the left foreground.

I agree, very good effort! :) I'm blinded by the sun 8)
Did you add trees at the horizon? Looked a bit pixellated to me at first glance but I didn't know where it came from... :-\
Title: Re: Mellow Morning - Finished :)
Post by: Tangled-Universe on February 02, 2009, 03:44:13 AM
Thanks guys :)

MacGyver:
I duplicated the tree-populations and made them denser at the horizon.
The reason it can look pixelated is because this has been down-sized from the 3525x1500 original.

Post by: Tangled-Universe on February 02, 2009, 04:33:24 AM
I'll upload the full res at deviantart tonight so you can see.
Another reason could also be that the density is slightly too low and since the trees are quite slim and tall they may look blocky in the distance. See for youself in the full res version as I don't have it here at work ;)
