Title: Bonsai in a Pot
Post by: RArcher on January 25, 2009, 11:01:40 PM
Further work with Klas's tree's and grass.  Idea of the bonsai thanks to Choronr.

Clouds are a modification of the ones I posted here:

hmm... I liked the tree much better in the previous image (the one with the DOF).

But besides: Unless the tree and pot are not put next to something bigger, they don't look like bonsai.
It looks more like a regular tree put in a giant pot, sitting on a field of tall grass. Or maybe that was intentional? I don't know, of course. :-)

Cheers,
Frank

Thanks Frank,  the more I look at it the more I agree with your assessment.  Technically the plant and pot are the correct size (around 300mm diameter for the pot and about 600mm high for the plant), and the camera is only 150mm above the ground, but it certainly doesn't seem that way.  I'm trying out a few different viewpoints to see if I can help the scale out.

I think it might work if you tried the DoF trick again. One of the issues with using DoF is it can make your subject look like a model, which is ideal in this instance :)
Great work nonetheless :)

Was thinking if maybe you adjusted the hgt to .4 or .5 and left the other 2 scale settings at 1 it would look more like a bonsai? Just a thought?  :)

to RAcher: Is that a swimming pool that you have the tree in? I love This tree model, but I think it has always needed better bark textures. The Klass bonsai is looking pretty good, and I hope he releases it for public consumption soon. I only wish there where more tree varieties in the same class that Klass has produced. Could you give the site a look at how you set up your textures for this tree foliage with a screen grab showing how you got such good translucency and color?

I agree with the other commenter - it looks like a normal tree in a giant pot

Most bonsai I have see have a much higher foliage to trunk ratio (example above)

I like the concept tho, and the lighting was quite nice.
