Title: Delete single objects from population
Post by: leafspring on February 06, 2009, 05:27:25 AM
Hi there,

I'm quite new to Terragen 2 and I am a little bit messing around with populations (XFrog Trees to be precise) and it works rather good. Except that there is one tree standing in front of the camera and I want it to disappear. What possibilities do I have to get rid of a single object from a population? Or do I have to repopulate until I am satisfied with the tree positioning?

thanks in advance  :)

You could create a painted shader, paint in the spot in front of the camera and use that as inverted blending shader for the populations distribution shader. That way the trees will not grow in the place you painted.

Thanks for the fast reply. :)
unfortunately it was a little bit to advanced for me.   :-\

So, I have the population and within I have an Object Maker and a Density Shader. In my case the input for the latter is a surface layer which has a Blending Shader input. And you suggest, I create a Painted Shader and connect it to that input?

And another question: For testing I have just created a Painted Shader but when I open it and switch to Paint Mode I only see a gray canvas. Although I set the view to the current render camera it remains gray.  How am I supposed to see where I am painting? :-\
And I wasn't able to find a kind of "invert" button for/within this shader.

Or am I just doing everything terribly wrong here?  ::)

I paint facing the terrain from above, leaving everything at default.  Then if I don't like what I've painted, I clear everything and set different settings until I'm happy.  This works will as a density shader to your population.

The best thing to do when painting is to set the camera so the entire area you want to paint is visible, and then you let the preview window render to full quality (just wait until it's finished). Then pause the preview render so it doesn't start all over every time. then paint what you want, it turns white where you paint.

When finished, if you want to invert the colours, create a colour shader and place that between the painted shader and the blending input. Set the settings of the colour shader to the opposites, so black as light colour and white as dark colour.

A much simpler answer is to just move the camera a tad!

Yeah or repopulate with a different seed value

You can't delete single instances at present, though it's something we'd like to add at some point. In the meantime the above solutions should work.
