Title: What's up?
Post by: buzzzzz1 on February 12, 2009, 05:16:46 PM
Let me start off saying I'm not bitching about the Final not being out because I understand what a job it must be writing this software. I would just like to hear something from Matt on how things are coming along. The Beta came out on November 09, 2008 and we haven't heard much since. How about a " State Of Development Address" or something?  You know, just a little communication with your supporters.

Thanks in advance

Hi,

I think we'll have another beta coming out in the near future. Since the last one there have been three alphas with a long list of bug fixes and improvements, as well as a few handy new items.

Regards,

Jo

Thanks for jumping in Jo!  Good to hear, sounds like there's a lot going on behind the scenes. Looking Forward to what's next.  :)

Here's 2 screenshots in case it disappears:

This is certainly not old news, but I wish it didn't come out like this. It looks like something created back in 2008, it still lists the beta version. Maybe it's not yet approved for production, but then why have it in an open subdirectory on the site? Oh well, I like the design as well.

No, it actually says TG2 will be out the same year this page will be published on the Planetside homepage... There's a big difference!

Yeah, I'll bet you like the banner, T-U. I'll bet that Oshyan won't be particularly happy that his revision was discovered before it was ready ;). However, I'm a little bit  surprised that it was indexed on a search engine already. That's not the way these things usually work, unless there was another link to it somewhere.

It was a joke O_b :)
But I'm as surprised as you I have to say.
Am curious when this version of the site goes 'on air'.

Looks like it's already on air.  :D  If you go to the forum, some people have already registered.  Oops!

hmm, i'm sorry if i spoiled the surprise  :-\ but was too excited when i found this. hope it's ok!...
Anyway, i guess they'll be releasing this when the final version is release the coming months, at least it should be the logic way to do it. Again, the new look is realy really cool and professional.

lol. I think Planetside like keeping good control over the revelation new things like this, so this is all quite surprising. Anyway, I already want to buy some merchandise with that new logo.  :P
(I'm always on about Planetside merchandise for some reason. lol.)

Yeah the new one looks slick. It'd be good to have it on a mug or a pen drive. Ooh a pen drive for my TG2 stuff!! ;D

If just one person opens the page online even once, then Google's engine will likely snag it.

No, Google has to find out for themselves, either by making their bot follow links to it or by having it submitted through their system manually. If this was a test site, there should have been no external links on the internet for Google to see, and I doubt any of the Planetside staff submitted it.

I was wondering about the fact that google has already indexed the new site as well. Apparently the new site (which is looking fantastic, by the way) seems to be based on Joomla. I don't really know this CMS but perhaps it is registering the particular site's URL somewhere during the installation so it can be initially found by the google crawlers.

edit: Interesting. Just found a website where the URL to the new site is stated but not as a link but just in plain text. But google might be crawling text-URLs as well. So this is possibly the source for the indexing.

Googles pageranking system can sometimes take ages, believe me, I've slogged it out with them before trying to get a site listed.
One link may have been posted somewhere, months ago, and just been forgotten or accidentally overlooked.
OB's right, though, you just need to wait on their bots doing a perfunctory trawl, no matter how much they tell you your site will be included in the next few days.

We've been found out! ;D The site is based on Joomla, yes, and was designed by a company who happened to also put it in their portfolio even though we haven't launched it fully yet. So that's why it's in Google's index. But yes, that's the new work-in-progress site, we're just filling it with content and we'll be launching it in the near future.

By the way the forum is not separate, it's just a customized theme, so no need to re-register. :)

I gotta disagree.  All it takes is opening a page up to the Internet once and Google can nab it.

And how is that supposed to work? Where should the crawler get the URL from?
And how comes there are websites that aren't listed in the google index?

Just wondering, people who visit a site while having the google toolbar with pagerank and feedback and everything... will they be used as source for adding new urls?
Title: Re: What's up?
Post by: leafspring on February 14, 2009, 08:19:53 AM
Well, it is suspected by some people but Matt Cutts, a google technician, denies it. (as do other google employees)

@calico: An addition to my answer to your post: It is possible that a simple visit brings an URL into the google index but only under certain conditions. For example as a referrer-link in an open webstat of a server. But an URL is not per se added to index if it just was visited by someone.

I doubt they need that Mohawk, go out to the homepage and check the number of guests, 10 to 1 that most of them are bots, sifting through the server. There are codes to turn them off, and higher security for private static sites, but as Ashundar is down right now, nothings foolproof. ;) Burns me up when I see an obvious hacker, on the board with me...

I'm not sure how it works, since I'm not inside Google.  But, I know it has worked this way on a page that was made public that shouldn't have and the incident was only one time.  The site kept the information, even after we locked the same page down.

It definitely can happen.  I had a site that only had one page with "this site is under construction" text on it and google picked it up within a few days.  There weren't any external links (or any links for that matter) on the site and nobody knew about the site.
