Title: Alpine Fractal
Post by: sjefen on March 02, 2009, 06:01:31 PM
Will the "Alpine fractal" be improved by the final release?

Hi Terje,

Perhaps everyone knows this except me, but what's wrong with it?

Regards,

Jo

Well, first of all, it's very, very slow :), but my main problem is these strange displacment error's.
I often find myself I nice view, but when I render I see that some of the mountains have this ugly displacements on them.

agree (like big step on the edge)...
but i saw some good results with it in this forum so maybe it's not buggy ^^

What's wrong with it?            ;D

Not a very realistic model of a mountain. Lacks angled strata patterns (Might be done with strata & outcrops shader) and particularly several layers of erosion which i know is hard to do procedurally but with out this mountains in Terragen 2 will always look fake. I guess this is the magic treasure for all who wait is layered procedural erosion including river system channels.

There is a bug in the displacements but we're not able to fix this for the 2.0 release.

It's slow because it's a difficult algorithm to evaluate quickly. You need to be very sparing with the number of octaves. It does what it does :) Combine it with other shaders to improve it how you like.
