Title: Can this be done with terragen 2
Post by: mmatthe8667 on March 19, 2009, 04:03:16 AM
I was wondering if with terragen 2 and if you have multiple computers either local or over inet.  To allow the render to take place on multiple computers to speed up rendering.  I know my computer isn't "top of the line" but some renders seem to take a very long time.  So wondering if able to split renders to get a final object render.

You'll need a special license to do this.  It's possible.

Just to clarify you can render animations on multiple computers with a third party render manager but although you could set a single large image to render with adjacent "crop regions" over a network you could easily run into GI mismatches.

You get 5 network licenses with Deep+animation, don't you?

Yeah but there's no way for them to actually be networked together, or is there?
You'd have to open the tgd on each computer and manually assign frame blocks individually in the case of an animation, or assign overlapping "crop region's" in the case of a large single image. I'd like to be wrong but I'm pretty sure there's no real networking in Terragen2.

Hi,

TG2 doesn't have any network facilities itself, but it can be used with network rendering/batch processing systems. That's why the Deep version has a command line interface as well.

the nice thing about the animation/batch render settings is, you can set the starting frame, and every so much frames you want rendered.
For example, if you use 3 computers, you can set the first to start at frame 1, the second at frame 2 and the last on frame 3, and then you can tell them to all render every 3rd frame.
So pc 1 renders 1, 4, 7, 10, 13, 16 and so on.
     Pc 2 renders 2, 5, 8, 11, 14, 17 and so on.
And pc 3 renders 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18 and so on.

That way you can already preview the first part of the anim before the batches are finished.

Also if it is a commercial project that's worth it you can send your file to these guys and get it rendered on their farm:

never tried it, so I couldn't give any reputation.

As for the batch rendering, there is a German guy that wrote a plugin for TG2 that apperently even does e.g. cam moving on a per frame basis, meaning you could get some fairly simple Camera animation done with the free preview.  I can't find the link right now, but I remember the preview videos weren't that perfect.  However the batch render it comes with seems nice.
