Title: Terragen 2 on Linux using virtualbox
Post by: rolothomasee on March 20, 2009, 12:27:41 AM
Just wanted to report that I have just installed Terragen2 on a virtual Windows XP box using Virtualbox (www.virtualbox.org) running on a Debian Lenny host (KDE 4.1 desktop).

So far so good. Everything seems to be working as advertised. Renders are not unusually slow (the host machine only has 1GB RAM and only 512MB is allocated to the virtual machine). And oh by the way, the host machine is 5 years old.

Intel P4 3.0 GHz
Abit IC7-G mobo
1 GB RAM
Matrox Parhelia 128 video card
(plan on replacing the Parhelia with a used Nvidia 7800GS since I can't get the Matrox card to run in dual head mode under X-windows)

There have been numerous posts regarding T2 running under wine with mixed results. I have a couple of other apps that don't behave under Wine (Globalmapper for one...it wouldn't read my registration under Wine but works as advertised on a virtual machine) so I thought I would try out this Virtualbox approach. So far I am very happy. I think if I add another 2 GB of RAM T2 render performance will be acceptable.

Terragen 2 works on the wine 1.2-rc7, but...

Wouldn't it be nice to just get a native linux version of terragen?
