Title: A new day dawns *V3*
Post by: FrankB on March 23, 2009, 07:56:02 AM
Hi all,

thought I'd share this new image of mine.
The focus clearly is on the sky - it's more complex than it would look from the thumbnail. I have tried to add a tree populations but got too many ray trace errors. Probably something wrong with the TGO I was using. So no trees this time ;-)
Hope you like it, still.

Cheers,
Frank

Sky is like a watercolor.  It's beautiful.  To be very picky, it's a little pattern strong in a couple of places.  But, nature can be funny that way, as well.

a real beauty Frank!....how many cloud layers, and did you add colour to any of these, or were they coloured purely by tg atmo?

Thank you Calico - I see what you mean and I am already on it... not quite sure where the sharp lines come from, but I'll figure it out eventually.
Stay tuned for a second version.

Thanks!

Purely TG2, other than level adjustment in post, but no colors added "artificially". And it's 3 layers of clouds.

Cheers,
Frank

Beautiful dawn colours and excellent cloud formations. What do you attribute that crease across the sky to?

Thanks!

Not entirely certain, but if I change the cirrus cloud type from 2D to 3D, it goes away.

here's a much polished second version.
Now has a few xfrog trees, Klas' gras and a windmill and fighter jet object I found over at terragen.org.

Please have a look at the full image, the thumbnail doesn't tell you much.

Hope you like it, comments welcome :-)

Cheers,
Frank

That is spectacular Frank.  Personally the fighter jet doesn't do anything for me, but the rest is beautiful.

Agree the jet is kind of a deterrent but the rest of the scene is wonderful

Thanks guys!

hey... what's wrong with the jet, noone seems to like it there?  ;)

Where I live, I see some flighing around every now and then. Although they don't fly that low anymore.

Cheers,
Frank

Here's a version with a flock of crows instead. Pulled that from terragen.org, too. Looks nice I think.

Regards,
Frank

You know, I was just thinking ( :-[ ), maybe, just maybe it would be cool to have those flock of birds coming out of the middle of the field, but much closer to the camera.  I guess it depends upon the quality of the crows.   :P

Much better than with the jet imho... although I like their shape normally. Anyway, the birds seem to fit better with your image :)

I gave that a thought, but decided against it. I believe it contributes to the impression of depth much more when the flock of birds is farther out.

The sky is beautiful. The new version with the birds is definitely the best one.
Keep up the great work Frank

It is quit obvious that sometimes (even more so in this case)peer reviews are/can be for the birds.  Nice sky colors, and horizon details.

I think that the Lockheed SR-71 Strategic Reconnaissance Aircraft, is a nice touch. Great image.  ;D

Fantastic image in any version. Personally I feel like the later revisions lost some of the peacefulness and simple beauty of the first one, but the addition of objects definitely helps the realism of the ground. I've just finished driving from San Francisco to LA and back again and you do see a lot of open ground, with few trees, mostly just smooth grass. For my taste I think I'd prefer to see maybe a single windmill strategically placed, and then fewer trees in realistic clumps (maybe in creases in the terrain where water might collect).

I think the reason for the line in the first version was that when using 2D clouds, the shadow rendering of the terminator (where the sun is cut off by the shadow of the planet basically) is less realistic and "harder" when there is no volume to the clouds. 3D clouds handle this more realistically.
