ok i start off by choosing all my settings the way i want i try to render my image and every time it crashes ive tried changing the settings and the same thing. but with smaller render sizes it will render the image and as son as i try to do something it crashes. so i just havent been able to do any renders yet, please help.
could you post your computer specs please?

Will

833mhz CPU and no graphics card will make it very very difficult for Terragen 2 tech preview to function...I for example have two 2.9 ghz CPUs 1 gig of ram and a Nvidea GTX 7800. Im not sure if it can run on your current system thougg sorry...

As stated on Planetside's site FAQ for min requirements:
What will the system requirements for the Windows version be?
We're still evaluating this. However, the absolute bare minimum would be any Pentium/AMD, and 256Mb of RAM might be enough. But we may have to increase these requirements by the time TG2 is released.
As always, the faster the CPU and the more RAM you have, the better.
We don't yet know what versions of Windows we can support, but Windows 2000 and Windows XP will certainly be supported.
Will TG2 require a powerful graphics card, and will it benefit from one?
TG2 will not require a powerful graphics card. However, you will certainly benefit from having one, much more so than with the current version of TG. TG2 uses OpenGL on Windows and the Mac for drawing graphically intensive parts of the user interface, such as the 3D Preview and the network view. It is not used for final rendering however.
Any recent graphics card should stand you in good stead. TG2 does not currently take advantage of the shader capabilities of advanced cards, but it may do in the future. Graphics card technology is still changing rapidly so it's hard to predict where things may end up by the time TG2 is released.
seems to prove me wrong, good new it would seem :) if such is true it could be a bug.

Will
no graphics card?
yea which with his limited CPU would explain a lot of the trouble but accorting to buzzzzz's post it seems to be with-in the min requirments.
Regards,
Will
ill just try re-downloading it.
ps soon i will be buying a new computer with a graphics card
1.something ghz
512mb ram
etc
etc
The Celeron processor could be your problem, Terragen 2 is a math intensive program and probably is to much for it. I'm sure once you get a new system you will have a lot of fun with Terragen2.
Glen
thnx all for the info for now ill just keep using the original terragen
Graphics cards are sort of cheap if you shop on eBay. Don't give up. TG2 is much better, though I still love the first Terragen.
my computers power supply cant handle any more upgrades
@lucifer...don't bother with a new video card. Your current system will just not be able to effectively handle the processing requirements of TG2.
In my previous thread on water render times...it took me 70 hrs to do an 800X600 image with my P4 2.2Ghz machine. I think superza has one still rendering...130hrs so far with a Pentium D945 machine....and not even close to being completed.
My brother's comp is a Dimension 3000 and it has a Celeron 2.4 ghz. TG2 runs fine and is in fact faster than my machine, which has a P4 1.7ghz. I think memory speed also has to deal with render times...I don't know.

Wowwwww. Those scenes must be complicated.
@viche...remember that lucifer only has a 833Mhz machine...your 2.4 Ghz is SIGNIFICANTLY faster.
And, No, the scenes were not complicated...the link to my image is in the thread on water render times.
Ah, water. That might be the cause... ::)
Yea nothing is optimized yet.
Regards,
Will
Yeah, Will's right. Nothing's optimized. :o
@will & calico.....guess you didn't read my post in the water render thread....it appears that even with "reasonable" optimization, render times may be unwieldy...
"Really, what I am saying is that to produce a print quality(3200X2400) of the same image that took me 70 hrs (for 800X600)...would take 16 times as long...in other words, 1120 hours (or about 47 days!)!!!!
Even IF there was a 25% optimization success...it would still take 840 hours!
Based on the render time benchmark database...even IF a CPU was 3x as fast as my machine....that same render would still take 210 hours! Keep in mind, my render had NO clouds and NO objects, few shaders....it was technically very simple!
Unless SIGNIFICANT optimization is achieved in future builds of TG2, render times will be unacceptably long for "casual" users....and, I think that may affect registered program purchase decisions."
I did read it but I was talking about how he couldn't render with this computer not the water part. Also do you know what the diffrence is betwean old terragen water and the new terragen water system?
Regards,
Will
Probably turned up the detail settings waaaaay up.
;D Guys, just a little note here. I run TG@ on my laptop ;D
1.07 Ghz Pentium M with 512 Mb RAM and onboard graphics.
I OCCASSIONALY get a crash, but I save very often and the render times for all of the things that I have done in here so far have only been at the most 2 hours. However, no water.
Now, I also recently moved it over to my desktop so that it will draw the preview faster, that has...
2.8 Ghz AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core
2 Gigs of RAM
Nvidia 6800 Ultra Graphics card with 580 Watt PS
Still Planet only that I am currently working on, 1 hour 42 minute render.
@angealus...try one with some water, some shaders and some cumulus clouds (high sample) and quality setting of 1 for your render on your laptop....Your batteries will run out long before the render finishes...
And, that's just for a 800X600....for print size multiply your render time by 16!
Your new desktop should move things along much better though....
I sure would like to see the Size and Quality of these Two Hour renders.
strangley enough I got a 59 minute render of a lunar surface with a planet rising in the backround (ill post it as soon as its finsihed) it was 800 x aprox. 377 quality 1 and GI at 7.
Regards,
Will
I guess 800x600 doesn't cut it for me. I have been rendering 1280x960 which is nothing as compared to what I use to render in TG 9.43. Java says we don't need to downsize with TG TP which I will see when I render a scene worth printing. I can print 13"x19" with my home printer, so we share see.
If you tried to print that 800X377 image of yours at 300dpi......it would be 2.7 inches by 1.2 inches in size....LOL!
yea I know but Im running a free version so I can't get it any bigger pluse thats what I use PS for :)

Will

Oh I see, I use PS also but not to enlarge small renders. I would like to see a 800x600 enlarged to render a 24x36 print. Even "Genuine Fractal" which is a plug-in is good, but not that good.
I put the max size in so lets see what happens... UPDATE: ok what happens is that my system runs out of ram after trying to save the file....man.

Will
Ok
the following three were done on my laptop. No WATER. the longest one was the one with the stars in the background,1:42 minutes. The test image only took 32 minutes to render, i however had to take it over the the desktop to change it and get better preview times.
by the way the test is what i am working on currently with the help[ from you guys in here, Thanks all!
The FAQ entries on system requirements do not apply to the Technology Preview and will almost certainly be revised before the final release as well. Most of those FAQ's are still useful and up-to-date, but the system requirements in particular I wouldn't put much stock in. I would say you need a minimum 1Ghz CPU with 512MB's of RAM to run the Tech Preview, and it won't be pleasant to use on that configuration. I would recommend at least 2Ghz and 1GB of RAM for enjoyable use.
