I have the same thing happening on a 4 yo notebook and a 5 yo PC that I use only for quick tests. I always blamed it on the age of the on-board videocards.

I have a brand new machine with Win Vista Ultimate and a dual Core 3,16 GHZ
Graphic Card is a MSI N9800GTX from 2008.
The previous version of Teragen always runs well, but this version seems to be buged.

Look also at the thread "Sunlight Problems"

I think you all have clipping distance issues.

Check this article on TGBlog: http://en.tgblog.de/?p=43

Sorry, but I don't think so, unless this clipping distance is machine dependent: .TGD's that showed fine on the more recent machine had this weird sky on the older ones and .TGD's with that odd looking sky showed OK when used on the more modern PC.

Normally this is a graphics card driver or age issue. In the case of the notebook examples, they probably just have very poor OpenGL support, and there's not really much that can be done. With newer cards OpenGL support should be fine, but drivers are not always the best. If you have upgraded to the latest driver and are still having problems I'm not sure exactly what's going on here. As far as I know nothing should really have changed in the 3D preview display from the beta to the final, so it doesn't make much sense that it would have been different with a previous version. Can you give the specific version number of the graphics card driver you're using?

Hello Oshyan,

i have a MSI Nvidia 9800 GTX Graphic-Card. Driver Version: 7.15.11.8250 from 27.03.2009
It´s a very strange problem. Terragen often has this clipping since the newest Version, but sometimes it worked fine (very rare)
At the first start and nothing selected all works fine in Terragen. If you create a simple landscape "Power Fractal" the sky becomes that ugly look.
But sometimes it worked fine with no clipping. I have deinstalled Terragen and reload the Previous Version and all went fine.
Deleted the older Version and installed the newer Version the same Problem occured.

Many Regards

Peter

What previous TG2 version are you referring to? Perhaps try this beta driver here: http://www.nvidia.com/object/winvista_x64_185.66_beta.html

I have installed the BETA Driver and the error occures.

First i start Terragen(All went well)....then i create a procedural terrain(All went well)....then i create a fake stone shader and the Error appears. Sometimes all is fine but with the next start the clipping is there again...

I used the Version: 1.99 from 08.2008

I'd suspect the stones...  I had an occasion where the sky turned into triangles.  I started ripping things out and it was the ripping out of the fake stones and a merge that gave me back my sky.  I was close to the ground, but never-the-less...

Being *within* any displacements can cause problems, certainly. Sometimes also very small scale settings can cause certain render issues.

I don´t know what it is, but it´s not satisfactory. Seems to be only me with this prob. :-(
Does anybody have the same graphic card like me?

Tried the advice from Mohawk and it works !!!
When the clipping occurs you should press ß or´ and the effect vanished.
Great advice!

I think this topic is now closed.  :-)

Many thanks to Mohawk

Glad to know it was resolved! Strange that such a modern card would have unusual clipping distances, but good to know.

Hi, I have started to get this problem with the latest release of tg2. It's ok until I open a node window as a separate window and then maximise the 3d window in the main terragen app then I start to get this problem. Not straight away but after messing around with the nodes for a well. I know when it starts to happen because the heighfield lines and the camera lines become thicker than they normally are.

I have a nvidia 8800 gfx card with newish drivers and like I said it only happens to me when I open a separate node network window and maximise the main 3d window. I used to do this with previous version and didn't get this problem.
