Here is another jungle :)
For the leaves in the water I used a fake stones shader that was controlled by a painted map.
Wow! This is looking great. The foreground and middleground are excellent. Background seems a bit too repetitive and "flat" somehow, but overall a really nice image. Mind if we add it to the gallery? :)

Of course, do it!!!
Thank you.
Btw the birds aren't single objects. I purchased them years ago somewhere (don't remember) as two different objects "flock of birds".
great shot !
admire!
Beautiful!
I always love your colors Hannes! :-*
Hi
WOW realy great!
ciao
Naoo
contrary to Oshyan, I think the background and middleground are the image's strength. To me, the foreground and also the part with the leaves in the water give it away as CG for me. If you'd cut away the lower third, the remaining result is really good.
Cheers,
Frank
Wonderful work, bravo!!!
Wow great detail amazing ;D view
I must say that i totally agree with Frank about the middle and background being the strength of this render ^^
matter of taste ;)
Amazing textures, and great lighting. Very nice! Also good variation of trees.
Very nice. I especially like the touch with the floating leaves.
Awesome work!
Thierry
And another fine piece of work :) I really like your style and technique Hannes!
As Frank and others said, I think the mid- and background work best for me. They are quite realistic and the foreground isn't really, so that "unbalances" it a bit (is that english??).
The leaves in the water is a nice idea and I like the execution.

Dramatic view, beautiful lighting! I like the 'rusty' areas on the rocks.
It seems there are a lot of bird nests there ;)
Thank you for sharing.
Incredible! :o
Thank you all!!!!
Interesting how taste can differ. I prefer the background too.
Very nice, like others have said I lie the mid/bacground the best. I did notice that soe of the leaves in the water get cut off at perfectly straight lines, also I think that very yellowish color looks out of place...though since I've never been to the Amazon yet it may be accurate ;D
Fair points all, I suppose from a strict realism standpoint the background, and particularly the middleground, is better. I guess I just enjoy the variety and interest in the foreground more than the more "boring" (and IMO unrealistically repetitive) background. But as I said it's a great scene regardless. ;D

I love the lighting and subtle atmo especially!
Hannes
Very well put together. Am using it as my background pic at the moment ;D ;D.
Being a person that has lived and worked in the bush all my life I can see a lot in the background
- the river may meander around the hill behind the birds and exit the pic on the right hand side or this is the headwaters of a river
- the shadow areas to the right of top centre indicate that there are streams or creeks that feed the main river
- the cliffs to the right of top centre may well be a continuation of those in the right of the pic
- the vegetation in the water could be water lillies as the river is not running quickly
And lastly we were told as uni students that if people are not talking about a piece of art then it is not worth looking at - we all see different things in a piece of art
Mike
Thanks again.
Being a person who neither lived nor worked in the bush or even has seen it with own eyes I'm very glad about your comments.
Like most of the time I started this without knowing what would be the result.
The image was almost finished when I realized that the river looked rather dull. So I had the idea of creating some flora in the water, but I didn't know how to do. First I tried to use image maps with drawn plants but it didn't really work. I then had the idea of using a fake stones shader for some kind of water lillies or whatever it is. It took quite some time to get the stones look like that (green with a separate shader and not like water warts ;D).
I actually still don't really know how I did it. I pulled some strings in the dark and scary mystical node editor and eventually it worked.
So I then rerendered the water parts.
I then thought there should be some fog. I really didn't want to render the whole stuff again because I used some high settings (GI relative detail - 4, which really makes a big difference, unfortunately also in rendertimes :()
So I rendered the whole scene with complete black textures, lower settings, no environment light and some clouds used as fog and comped the whole thing together in photoshop.
That's quality Terragening. Inspirational. I would have waited till those pesky birds flew out of shot before pressing the shutter, but that's just a personal choice.
John
very nice work!
Beautiful in its apparent simplicity :)
Lovely work. I'd love to see some different takes on lighting with this piece too. This one is great, but I'd love to see a mistier, hazier, softer, look. Quite impressive.

Hannes
Outstanding render as per usual. I can spot your style a mile off. This is definately one of your best, the lighting and distant atmo really make it for me.

Beautiful work !
