Hi guys, got a new one I'm working on. It has the light evening clouds from the sky starter pack, but other than that it's built from scratch. The scene resembles the plains before the quartz mountains, in Spitzkoppe, Namibia.
Hope you like it,
Frank

Great realism - the lighting is superb!
beautiful, love the details here!
Like I said the lighting and atmo are beautiful. If it's up to me you could really leave out the clouds, would make the image more serene. I'm glad you didn't over-do the clouds by loading the sky with it though.
The stones are awesome and the lighting is splendid. However, I still think you should do something about your base soil :)
Nice models as well and the overall color-palette is sweet :)
Martin
Beautiful stones! :D I agree about the clouds, the image would be quieter without them.
thanks for the comments so far :)
Martin, I'll scan a crop of my reference image and you'll see that the sand is really dark, moist brown earth. I think the real problem is that I may be missing some more smaller white stones. Overall, it's a very unusual place, here in reality.
Glad you at least do not entirely find these clouds out of place ;D
Considering the image renders pretty fast, I may add a few improvements another time and render again.
Cheers,
Frank
I am very impressed with this scene; and, find it inspiring to go ahead and try something like it. I think I saw those dried grass clumps on one of Jay's renders ...looking great against those while boulders. Where did you get the dried grass?
Hi Bob,
Jay has sent me the link to the product on turbosquid. it was at 13 USD.
I think it's a product from Walli, actually.
Here's the link: http://www.turbosquid.com/3d-models/3d-grass-gras/414182

Thanks Frank, I'll check it out. It is most natural looking, especially when mixed in with some green grasses and other ground covers.
Love the quartz texture and displacements, brilliant.
Awesome stones
Hi
The middle part is perfect!
ciao

Good work on the stones !
Cool Fake Stones. Good lighting. Great point of view. Lovely scene.
You could scuff up the stones a little...a picky point.
Beautiful.
Well, of course I like the (fake?? ; ) stones (structure and colours are fantastic). Makes you wanna use them for your marble floor in your kitchen. ; )
But I have to admit that the scene itself looks too bright with laking contrast (like a photo taken with bad exposure settings). And the grass objects are good, though they still have a CGI feeling about them, dunno excactly why, perhaps it is the fact that they all seem very similar, with only two different colour-types.
Composition is nice, maybe just some more detail in the background and better exposure would make it perfect.
Thank you
All,
does the image seem over-exposed / too bright on your screens as well?
Thanks;
Frank
Nope - exposure looks just fine on my calibrated screen. However, Sen's image posted in another thread looks dark to me.
Ok, so here is version 2, which I consider final. Thanks for viewing and any potential further comments.
Cheers,
Frank
Fantastic! :D
(Is the lower part a bit grainy or do I see things which aren't there?)
This is absolutely awesome Frank. The lighting is just right and enhances the image perfectly.

I have taken the freedom to add film grain, that's probably what you notice here.

Looking super! Did you use an image map on the white rocks?
absolutely. an image of a marble floortile ;D

Thanks Frank, I need to try some of the dozens I have in my texture files.
marble is great for the fake stones. especially when it's black and white marble. the dark mandering arteries can be used both for color and for making cracks. for the cracks, you just need to invert the image.
cheers,
Frank
Hi
Oh wow, das ist gut!

Thanks for the tip on inverting the image map Frank; I'll be trying that out.

That was it, thank you for your reply :) New version's looking awesome! ;)
I love your surface on the stones. It looks like limestone and is a great contrast to the rest of the scene. However this is another scene where I like the first version best. I think the clouds were cool.
