Title: Rock Of Mayhem
Post by: Sen on May 09, 2009, 06:36:18 PM
Just finished rendering, after 16 hours. I guess my computer needs some sleep now.

Some interesting things you've got going on there. I like the red sky decay you've got going on in the two of three layers of clouds. You've got a lot of overlapping geometry in the plains going on, which adds to the alien'ist look, but could be problamatic the closer you get to it. That said, it looks like you've got lateral displacement worked out fine, which caused me a few headaches for a while. Some nice texture colouring too.

With a little work on the big cumulus-layer you'll have a real winner cloudscape. I really like the redsky decay, seen that irl and on many photos, well done!
Personally I'm not a fan of alien landscapes but you managed to create some pretty odd and weird shapes. Perhaps you could make some parts of the terrain a bit lower so it isn't obstructing your nice atmo anymore.

Hi

I like it a lot, only the foreground could be a little bit better (has a TG 0.9 look).
The Rest is great!

Thanks for your comments (and animated gifs, Phylloxera ; )

Terrain is created using TG2s intern Terrain-Functions and Displacements only. I still struggel to get the results I aim for, but still I like how this tourned out. Nevertheless the foreground needs a lot of improvement, but
@Tangled-Universe:  Well about the clouds, you're totally right, I'm not that statisfied, but all other attempts were even worse (converning the cloud's structure). I have to mention that there is only two layers of clouds, one 3D which surprisingly resulted in the smooth lower clouds and in the thick, over-structured higher clouds, and a 2D cloud for the high Altocumulus.

THe surface is done without textures which I'm a little proud of. : D
Nevertheless, due to the fact that my render already crashed once, after wasting over 10 hours, I won't stick to this one and start a new project.
But I sure appreciate your tips, expecially on the TG-1-look foreground and the ckouds and try to get into objects a little more.

David

Hey, great setup.  I love that structure in the background and your texturing in general.  The mountain in the background is especially eye-catching.  How did you get your ground textures?

Cool clouds, by the way.  Did you use anyone's pack for those?

Thanks a lot, calico. No, I did not use any packs, the clouds are created based on the tutorial by FrankB.
Is used about 9 layers and some sub-layers for the surface, the painted shader helped a lot to get more variation to the coverage.
Originally there was a lake in the scene, too. But it somehow didn't fit in there and overloaded the already (imo) too complex structures.

I did some colour and contrast editing in gimp, here's the final image:

I really like this Sen. It reminds me of the Dark Fortress in Krull which appears in a new position each day, but what really works here is the drama you've got in those clouds. Bravo!

too contrasted and saturated to my eyes, i can't understand the foreground... what's up, what's down...
the sky could be a killer one with some more work ! ^^
good light on the big rock too

I really like this. Good surface details and rocky forms but the sky is what makes this interesting. It is very dramatic and different.
