What is the tgw format? Glanced at it in hex editor, only could make out a few strings but mostly gobly gook without knowing what is where.

TGW is a proprietary format that has never been disclosed. There is a tool called TerraTweak that was created before TG2 was around, and it basically gets you an inside view of TGWs. It's a very powerful interface to tweaking settings, in fact. TG2 basically allows as much flexibility as TerraTweak, so there's not so much need for a tool like that anymore, but in it's day it was quite something:
