Title: Adventure
Post by: Hannes on May 17, 2009, 11:13:22 AM
OK, this is my contribution to the NWDA contest, and I just read that it's allowed to put the images into the gallery too. So this is what I did.
As I mentioned in the NWDA contest thread I had this Indiana Jones feeling in my mind.
The plane model is a free one from Turbosquid which I tweaked a bit. When the whole thing was rendered and put together, I rendered a b/w mask of the plane (a white selfilluminating material for the plane and a black material for the terrain, no athmosphere, no shadows) and used it to select only the plane in an editing app and created a little bit of motion blur on the plane.
The ruin is a terrain I created by drawing some structures in photoshop and using the BMP inflator in TG 0.9. I imported the .ter file into TG2 and used a heightfield resize operator to resize it.
The people are lowpoly humans from somewhere. I created a group of humans and saved these as an .obj file. So I only had to use one population for different people.
Fortunately I found some Indy fonts in the web. Most of the time I don't like too much writing on images, but this time I couldn't resist.

Einfach grandios!! Und so viel Arbeit, die du in deine Bilder steckst. Respekt! Und eine grossartige Idee mit der Ruine. Ich glaube, auf sowas würde ich nicht von alleine kommen...

Great ideas with the plane and the ruin! The dersert landscape looks very Indiana-like.

Excellent! I love Indy ;D
The image is named AdventureLow.jpg, will there also be an AdventureHigh.jpg? :P

Danke :) and yes there is a high version. I just had to reduce the quality a little bit to make the image file size lower than 250kB for the contest.

I forgot to mention that I used a water shader as a material for the propeller, which is a simple cylinder. The original model had a real (static) propeller, which wouldn't be very convincing for a flying airplane ;D

A water shader lol ;D Good idea, I didn't even notice anything unusual, it fits perfectly into the image!

Really well done. The subtle blur on the plane definitely adds to the realism. I hope we can add object motion blur to TG2 in the future.

Fantastic execution here Hannes.  The movement of the plane is really good and the entire theme is perfect.
