Title: Here I am again, with another question.
Post by: sexynerd on May 19, 2009, 04:29:39 PM
Ok....
Found out how awesome Terragen 2 is and decided that I wanted to import some 3DEM data into the program to try and see if I could recreate a local mountain. Read the tutorial, got the programs, installed the firmament.tpg file, then bam.....Terragen keeps crashing and saying that it can't find the startup file or something or other. Anyone had this problem before?

Terragen 2 and Firmament? The SOPack plugin-pack is for Terragen v0.9x.

firmament? wasn't that a plugin for old tg0.9 ?
I don't think you can use that with TG2.
I have no idea why it crashes, though. Logic seems to dictate that TG2 can't even integrate with firmament in any way....

[edit]apparently that other NWDA guy was quicker than I ;D [/edit]

that is awful. It would be so awesome to do that in Terragen 2. I guess I'll just have to uninstall and then download Terragen. I really like this program too.  :(

I am not an expert in this, but what I know is that there is a neat and free application, which will be revomed from the web end of may, called 3DEM. It can load DEMs and convert to the *.ter format.

Sexynerd, don't give up on TG2 - it can definitely use DEMs: as FrankB points out, 3DEM can convert from DEM to .ter (however, I should add that I haven't been able to get it to work in Windows Vista - -anyone else care to comment on that?) One person who is very experienced at working with real world data in TG2 is BigBen - although I haven't seen him posting lately.

Just to say I have 3dem working OK in Vista Ultimate (always the ones for understatement Microsoft).

I think also the 3dem site is closing soon.  Lovely piece of software though someone should adopt it.

We'll be mirroring 3DEM on Terragen.org once the main site goes down.

TG2 can also natively load DEMs in GeoTIFF format. GeoTIFF DEMs are available free from http://seamless.usgs.gov/

Very glad to know that.  Please if you can, host the older versions prior to 20.x  I use 18.7 and it works better.

I'm not sure if I have the older versions. If you do, we can probably host them. We've asked for specific permissions from Richard, the author.
