Hi,
I was studying the strata and outcrops stuff and this is the outcome.
I started with a painting shader on the flat surface and used this shader to limit a fractal terrain. That's how this huge 2000 meters high rock was formed.
In a next version I should improve the ground texture, as the trees seem to grow right out of the rocks :(
Thanks for watching.

really great rock - been trying to create something similar for a desert scene - can you be a bit more specific as to how you did this. not understanding how the painted shader was used to restrict a fractal

This is really a great terrain.
I would add some different layers of color to the strata.

Thanks :)
As for the painter shader, the fractal terrain was restricted by using the painted shader as a blendshader, which has the effect of cutting off the terrain outside the painted area.
It's indeed a good idea to add more colours to the strata.

Hi JimAward, That's one huge rock... I love the scale and the distant lower ground looks great. I do feel the trees don't fit the scene maybe mix a couple of different species (Bushes) and patch them up a bit with a density shader plugged into the populations... Hope you don't mind the criticism. ::)
Would be a great way of creating canyons too - superb pov here!
very nice result!....love the structures, any chance of a clip file/node shot?...:)
Nice structure of rock. Try adding a little reflectivity at the end of your structure's nodes for some believable sheen to the rock surface.
Structures are great, now for the surfacing! Add some sand or dirt and green for grass and teh trees won't be so "stand-out-ish" I think.
