Title: Struck it rich
Post by: groverwa on January 30, 2007, 01:40:59 AM
Gday

Having a bit of a play and tried to place rocks in the form of gold on the bed of this terrain. The surface of the rocks did not come out the same colour all over - any ideas why?

You may want to have a look here: http://forums.planetside.co.uk/index.php?topic=539.0  :D

Already a discussion with no real solution  :-\

Gday Voulge

Thanks - bit frustrating though

Have you got maximum slope turned on for the texture on the stones? Probably won't affect it, but worth a thought.

When you restrict the slope where the stones can exist, use a Surface shader and not a Distribution shader.  That should fix your problem  ;)

Do you have slope constraints turned on?

If so, change the slope constraints mix from "final normal" to "terrain normal".

Let us know if this solves it.

Gday

Thanks for the comments  - I had the Slope constraints in the Distribution shader turned on - problem is now fixed - see attached jpg

Will try the other things later

OK, I was the one who posted the other version of this question. I have seen your answers and have a few questions. Bear in mind I am probably being very dim.... If I turn the slope constraints off in the distribution shader my fake stones render fine, how the hell do I limit the slope the stones will be seen on?????

Moodflow, where are the "final normal" to "terrain normal" selection? In what shader? cause they arent in the distribution shader

MeltingIce, you say to use a surface shader, not a distribution shader... which one, there are a load of surface shaders, and I haven't yet managed to find one with altitude and slope constraints (though I admit I haven't tried all of them)

This is driving me mad. I can get stones where I want them, but they wont render correctly, or I can get them to render correctly, but loose the ability to restrict the slope they will render on.... doh!!!

Hi Mr Miley,
Creat a surface-shader and set its distribution to whatever you like. After that you might want to turn of the colour of this schader.
Now you can add fake stones as child-shaders of this Distribution ,-)

Hi there Voulge

Many thanks for that (and every one else, esp moodflow, your bit helped too) I finally figured out what you meant in your post... not a "surface shader", you meant a Surface Layer lol. It still wasn't working right, till I did moodflows "slope constraint mix" bit and that did it. Finally, I can have stones looking how I want 'em and in the right place too  :)

I'm a happy camper  ;D

Glad it worked out!

I had the same problem from day one, trying to map image textures to rocks, with the rocks affected by slope.  The textures themselves were also being affected by the slope, ruining the effect.

Matt Fairclough finally told us to use "terrain normal", and problem solved.

Terrain Normal is ONLY under slope constraints.

Now...add a reflective shader to the gold for an added effect! ;)

Thanks guys......

This one helped me a LOT.

After this huge break in working with TG I just wondered that I remembered a lot though....with a little help *g*.

Wish I had seen this before spending hours trying to solve the same problem   :)

I will need to do a higher quality test but it looks like changing to a Terrain Normal has also eliminated those stones that only appear as discoloured patches on the ground with no displacement.
