Title: Mission Peak Preserve *Final Update*
Post by: RArcher on August 13, 2009, 11:20:44 PM
Here is the start of my next scene.  The foreground is a dem of the Mission Peak Reserve near Freemont, CA.  The background then fades into procedural hills, and then into an alpine fractal.  There is still a bit of work to do to fix up some of the problems encountered so far.  There were a few render errors with the close plants where they were cut off between render tiles that I need to sort out.  Reducing the density of the grasses is needed as well to open up some of the dirt hills that are close up.  I need to decide whether or not to extend the tree populations back further in the distance.  More detail is needed in the foreground too.

Full size render (1650 x 1050) here:  http://www.archer-designs.com/temp/mission-peak/mission-peak-preserve-v1.jpg (http://www.archer-designs.com/temp/mission-peak/mission-peak-preserve-v1.jpg)

Looks fantastic thus far. I'd say definitely extend the trees.

really nice!

there are some hills in the mid ground that look a bit shinny, and I'd cut the haze down by half (but that's just me)

looking forward to more!

Very nice scene, Ryan. I would extend the trees as well, but there is the danger of overcomplicating the scene. And look at the shiny hill side, perhaps change the sun angle slightly to get rid of it. The foreground grasses (the 'green fuzz' just beyond the pebbles) are objects I presume, but how far do they extend? They are taken over by procedural grass in the distance?

It looks great on my monitor. But if you are not happy yet, then the final will be phenomenal.

For such a detailed scene, I'd like the mid distance to be a little more sharply in focus. Otherwise, very impressive.

The landscape is breathtaking. Very good detail work.
In my opinion you should lower the Haze's expire-height a bit, to give the sky a stronger touch.

Hi

Wonderful!
The best is the foreground and the middle with the trees.

Said: More trees behinde (perhaps fake?), and no shine.
And: More clouds would also be pretty.

Great suggestions everyone, thanks, I will definitely incorporate most of them.

Dune, The grass objects go from the front of the pebbles down the valley and over the first set of hills, around 500m or so.  I then transitioned into just normal surfacing for the rest.

I really like this. But I think it would be even better without the defocusing - there doesn't seem to be any reason for it.

I see how this is the start of a really cool final render eventually.
I like that you have that detailed foreground add to the depth of the overall scene. I am most curious about the next iterations.

As always this looks like it will turn into a very fine looking render!

Finally, an update and in fact the final version!

Pretty much everything except the base terrains have changed since the first version.

For anyone interested here is the list of vegetation used and where it appears:

Foreground grasses - 3 varieties by Walli
Midground grass - 1 variety by Klas
Midground bushes - 3 varieties by Walli
Tree coverage for the hills - 1 variety of Oak and 1 variety of Silver Birch by Klas
Tree coverage for the background hills leading up to the mountains - 2 varieties of Pine by Walli

Rendered at:

Detail: 1
AA: 10
GI 2/4

Approximately 13 hours rendering at 1600 x 1000.

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions, they certainly helped!

The image turned out a little larger than I can post here without reducing the quality too much so you can find the full version here, just click on the image to get full size:

Looks great. I would have made it more hazy, but only for the middle distance.

You sir, are very good at this! I especially love the distant mountains on the far left; something about them just makes me really happy.

I always wonder how people manage to create terrains like these to get a perfect view.. Myself, I haven't learn it yet, I just generate a random terrain and use 1 hour for a good spot :P
Beautiful image, very very inspiring!

nice one Ryan, I appreciate how much time you have spent on this...it has turned out to be a most excellent render!

On the one hand, a great deal of realism, yet on the other, a painterly feel (perhaps because of the DOF and the far haze, shading into the bright sky). Wonderful!

Hey everybody,

Since Ryan isn't allowed to say this, I will :)  The vegetation in this latest image was rendered using a higher quality render mode which is currently in alpha testing. The plants he listed don't render quite the same in the current public release, especially in the distance. I thought it was fair to let the rest of you know, since he mentioned which plants he's using but you're not using exactly the same renderer ;)

If you want to discuss what I've just said, please open a new thread so that we don't hijack Ryan's thread too much!

The flora this time around looks like it is attached to the terrain and not so static looking. I usually do not see this in many renders where the flora does not look as if it is a part of the terrain.
