Title: Ploughed Field
Post by: Gannaingh on August 18, 2009, 01:33:33 AM
As far as I know there have only been a few images of open fields so I decided to play around a bit and this is the result. The furrows and plant distripution are both controlled by a function chain that took me far too long to make work :P

The dirt and grass models are both from NWDA.

Mmm... sine waves ;). Nice image. The sharpness of the furrows at the horizon is a bit distracting, though. Maybe you could try using a distance shader in conjunction with the sine function to make the latter less influential (and thus smoother) as you go farther away from the camera.

o-b is having good suggestions, but nonetheless, that's a pretty awesome render!!!!

if you are using the sines as a mask, it's easy to make them fade out a bit by multiplying them with a distance shader. Do you know how to make that work? Otherwise I could explain...

Frank

Very good suggestions by O_b and Frank!

I like this image a lot. The vegetation looks very good and the ploughed soil is very convincing.
Great work!

Sweet.... I've got some carrots to plant. ;D Would you mind watering them? I'd like to know how this is achieved, it looks great.
Simon.

The dirt is models? Darn, I was about to ask you for that shader, this is one of the most convincing grounds I've seen in a long time.

no it's not a model, its an entirely procedural preset: http://www.nwdanet.com/buy-packs/details/29/7/preset-packs/dirt--and-soil-pack-by-rarcher

The dirt procedural, it is really awesome. More haze may 'blur' the distant furrows. This render is one of the best I have seen.

This is indeed a fine render. The sky is excellent. I'm planning to do something with fields in the near future, so would appreciate any tips.

Thanks all! I like the suggestion of bluring the rows in the distance so I'll have to try that soon.

@Frank: Thanks for the offer to help, I'll take you up on that if the scary blue boxes defeat me :)

@domdib: Ask away, I would be glad to help!

Great looking image!  You may want to reduce the reflectivity of some of the grasses, you seem to be getting some reflections on the grass stalks on the left that don't look quite right.

Very nice work, simple and complex at the same time.
