Title: Walli's Field
Post by: RArcher on August 28, 2009, 08:21:21 PM
Here's a new image comprised entirely of the brilliant vegetation modeled by Walli (hence the title).  Slight chromatic aberration added in post.

Wow.

I look at that and think ... That's better than Bug's Life! :) What took I don't know how many artists an incredible amount of time has been bettered (in a single frame) by two artists and a couple of programmers (who are, obviously, themselves artists in the application of their chosen field). The march of technology in this branch is incredible.

Add a slight breeze to the plants and a bit of a camera move and you've got the beginnings of an awesome scene.

For a moment, I thought I heard some bees. The realism here is striking!

how do you make it look so good and realistic? when i use walli's plants, it looks quite artificial after rendering

There are lots of settings. The atmosphere sample is one of them. 64 works well most of the time. I use 128 for the samples. This is high for the value. On the render tab, set the quality to 0.9+/-. The AA samples about 6. I use Ambient Occlusion in the lighting tab. Change it from Global Illumination. I think the plants had their leaf translucency changed slightly higher. It helps soften the plant leaves so they look more realistic. I've noticed many of the people who make the plants do not set this. It is lighting dependent. The lighting is also very important. I make it harder on myself by using low to the horizon lighting (too often?).

I think I'll just start posting my works (only they will be photos). Nobody can tell. :) Seriously, the time will come soon where you'll need proof that what you posted is not a photo.

Fantastic job again, Ryan.

Disclosure: I reckon Ryan is also using the new rendering mode for objects, which might be helping. ;D

New rendering mode for objects? Do I feel a new release coming? Is there now a 64 bit version? I'll be staying tuned. ;)

New rendering mode? Oshyan, you know how to get people's attention!

Extremely cool :)
I like the chromatic aberration, is that done manually (splitting channels, sphereizs ... etc), via a plugin, or via the "new rendering node ..." ??:)

Richard,  the chromatic aberration was added in Adobe Lightroom, though I am sure there are probably plugins available for gimp or photoshop.

64 bit is still a little ways off. Lots of work and all. ;) But the "new rendering mode" does bring some improvements you will likely benefit from, at least if you render objects. More details to come, and no release date yet, but Matt already mentioned it in another thread (where it got surprisingly little response), so I thought I'd do so again since the results are so nice here and I think people are wondering what might be giving some of these recent images an edge in quality and realism. :)

I was one who did reply to your mentioning this in the other thread, Oshyan, but I'll do it again to generate some response. So here it is; great feature, looking forward to the update!!

New rendering for objects..... Didn't I say anything? Damn I want it now. :o But if there is no release date, we can't get that excited yet. :'(

This weekend I visited the production of a TV-show in Cologne. Next day at breakfast, the showmaster and me were talking about visual effects in television. He assumes (without having seen this) that there is no need for natur in TV productions within the next 10 years.

I guess it will be quicker ,-)

I've been thinking about how to use Terragen 2 for a tv station logo. I'm waiting to get the full version, because I want it to be HD. But to do what I have in mind will call for a very wide group of shots, merged together seamlessly. The usual tacky logo stuff would be in front of this as it scrolls.
Anyway, a few tv stations in the area need new ID graphics. I need a new computer. :o

There will definitely be no need for nature in tv productions... in a sitcom ;D

There's two things keeping Terragen off the small screen (and big screen to a degree).

1. Miss-conceptions on the part of the design community, thinking Terragen is a small hobby or very specialized market. "Where on earth could we find someone who can even use this program?"
2. Long render times.

Both these issues are being addressed. If you look back through the archives of this forum and take a look at the images produced three years ago and those cumming out now, I mean wow!! how far we have come! We can now produce stunning images of better quality than the competition in a reasonable amount of time. Most studios will have their own render farm and the rendering efficiency is getting better all the time especially with the "bang for buck" cost of each render node dropping all the time.

It won't be long no before Terragen will be used as just another tool in the videographers tool box :)

Now that there is a 3D Studio plug in, I'll bet people will start using Terragen 2. Plug Ins are like wood working tools. You never have too many.
