I just wanted to post this link. This matte painting is so inspirational!!!
I know there's a lot of photography but nevertheless it's fantastic.

Incredible stuff here and it really shows there's quite a gap between fully CGI and matt painting which seems to predominately be photo bassed.

Cool pic. I think some of our Terragen 2 artists can do better. But that's a matter of taste and prejudice. (Being a Terragnauter, Terranughty?)

wow.  It would be cool and edifying to watch something like that being created.  I argue that the matte painting is an artist transforming material.  Photos are snap shot material cut and pasted (with the difficult constraint being that you have to be on-site or use someone elses) and CGI while controlled, is similar to photography in that it gives you the material to work with.  But to your point, this is beautiful and inspirational.
