Hi Guys.... Another attempt at creating strata. It's a combo of the tutorial TU gave us (big thanks Martin) and Volker's Cracks (oh er matron and big thanks). It's no where near finished, but I like the crispy flaky strata effect going on here.... please don't touch it as it will crumble and may cause a landslide. ;D Pops and other bits to be added yet.
Again suggestions and comments welcome as usual...
Cheers, Simon.
good looking start.
some colours' variation might be a good idea.
Do you plan to add some vegetation or water ?
some reflectivity to the rocks ?
Hi Seth... Thanks and all that is to come, specular, trees etc. really just working on the rock structure at the moment.... Question: what is the best way to add specular? By using the reflective shader, or default shader? My quip with the default shader is that you cannot turn the colour off... or can you somehow?
Cheers, Simon.
personnally i use the reflective shader almost all the time.
just think to uncheck the "ray traced reflections" box or it will take for ever to render.
and remember that reflectivity can sometimes changes the colours of your surface ;)
This looks good to me, but I agree with more colors being needed. Why not use a surface shader and plug the reflective shader into it; maybe a distribution shader would work better?
It looks like slate rock which is not really specular at all unless it just rained there or has more quartz in it then usual. For colors some reds and brown greys would look nice. Even purple, green or cyan would work but nothing rich in color but more along the earthy greying hue of a color.
For just being in its early stages of creation, I'd say you've got a real goody going here.
Cheers, guys... another update. I know the trees look awful, they're just to show some scale at the moment.
Cheers, Simon.
Hi
Rocks and cracks are great.
A small water on the ground could be nice.
ciao
Naoo
I want to climb and look for fossils. The gray color added to the cliffs works very well. I like the water shader (if you have not noticed :D), so I agree with a little water. Perhaps in water cut pools, but the river bed itself dry.
you definitely need more colour variation on the rock. and some reflectivity (hehe)

Hi Simon,
Any chance of getting a clip file of this rock structure? Thanks,
Bob
Thanks peeps...
Seth: There is a bit (reflectivity) on there already, but it's just not showing enough yet, I'll also play with the colouring a bit more in another version as I do quite like the colour of the rock as it is.... more tinkering needed.
Bob: Sure as soon as I tidy it up... it's a mess at the moment.
Naoo and njeneb: I'm thing about painting in a river bed... dry/wet... not sure on that one yet and there are some great fossils there... wouldn't mind hunting some down myself.
Cheers, Simon.
interesting displacements LC :)
it must be a long drop to the bottom of the canyon judging from the scale of those trees. :o
personally i think the surface at the bottom looks sorta plain.
Thanks Z.... the bottom is a bit plain at the moment... I am just setting up a load of rocks at the base of the cliffs, like they crumbled off and fell there.
Cheers, Simon.
The displacements are looking great!
Not sure how you managed it but the scale and texture + lighting are all V V V realistic!
Nice job!
Cheers Ryan and Renegade26, This one is for Seth ;) Rocks at the base need plenty of work yet and the trees are gone for now (faster rendering). I'm still working on more colour variations, then onto the rest... ;D tinker, tinker.
Cheers, Simon.
:D
This is looking real goood!
really cool rocks structures here....i can 't wait your fake stone surfacing... ;D
I like this. The vertical breaks in the surface are really nice.
the canyon displacements/texturing are looking Awesome, plus i like the FS on the bottom of the canyon
Another.... does anyone know what type of trees I might find here, as I don't think these work , they are there to show scale at the moment. Water will be tried later as it slows down rendering.
Cheers, Simon.
Walli's Plant pack pines, including the old pine would work. If it was wetter, Xfrog's sampler pines. Neuspadrin's grass pack has a dry grass patch which would look good also.
Thanks njeneb... they would work
I would actually go for dry bushes and grasses only, no trees. Sparse distribution, like in US Midwest.
Regards,
Frank
Agreed. If this were however north africa we would see clumps of palm trees in deep canyons like this. I guess i depends on what part of the world one want's to portray. ;D
Thanks for the suggestions, I did want to try grasses and bushes, but the scale of the canyon made them almost invisible. They would work on a nice low shot (I may try them on the ledge just on the left). And yes, Africa is another thought, which I may follow too. As I have a nice canyon going on here, I can develop other scenes from it. I must focus on what this scene is first. ::)
I'm experimenting with a river at the moment... I couldn't resist. ;) More to follow.
Cheers, Simon.
This is another version with more colours added into the rock face. (This is a stripped down focus on rock face version.) I have another version with rockfall, trees and river rendering at the moment.
Seth, you may like this one better.....Keep ya posted.
Cheers, Simon.
Lovely surfacing :)
That sucker is rich in mineral deposits. ;D
Here's another with more stone work and different colours.
Cheers, Simon.
man, this keeps getting better & better!!! ;D :)
i like the render above the most also.
The canyon wall is now officially awesome. ;) But one minor niggle - there seems to be a kind of haze visible further down the canyon - is that deliberate?
Domdib is absolutely correct! The canyon walls are really fantastic.
Thanks everyone... :) domdib, I haven't really touched the amto yet. This is a massive bit of rock, so that may have something to do with it? I'm having trouble with showing the scale, I may have to scale up the trees a bit and cheat it to be smaller, as trees look tiny... more like bushes, any suggestions would be good ;)
Cheers, Simon.
Are you still working on this one Simon?
Hi domdib, I have had a break, to let the creative juices flow again.... I will come back to it soon. It's so easy to get side tracked into another project, as there is so much to learn. I'm trying to battle away with the colour variation in populations at the moment.... I don't understand how to achieve this, although it looks fairly simple, it seems I am too. ::)
Cheers, Simon.
This is looking great.
Nice work, Hope to see some more soon
Get those trees away from the canyon! I like it better with just rocks. Maybe add a flying saucer down at the bottom picking up a rock for analysis? :D That would be better for scale than a bunch of tiny trees growing through the rocks. :D
Some conifers and shrubs would look nice down there. For that type of climate it would make sense but to be honest several dry shrubs and a few dry grasses would be nice.
Hi Simon,
I'm interested in this strata work. Would you be willing to share the .tgd?
Bob

Bob
i'm with choronr on this one.
The last render is very, very nice. You'd need something to show the immense depth, like a cabin or ruin down there, some animals, trees that you can 'see the size of', and then something on the rock face, like a bird or a pluck of grass or shrub, or a gnarled old tree holding tight and leaning over the canyon. Keep it up!
How have I missed this?! This looks great, fine work!
Really awesome stuff! Linda
Marvelous work. Extremely realistic!
wow! I love the surfacing, this would make an great example file to share! Is ther any chance you might be willing to share it?
cheers
