Title: Terragen used on Paramount's GI JOE: The Rise of Cobra
Post by: matrix2003 on September 26, 2009, 06:59:06 PM
Well Ive been home today not feeling well.  So I have been surfing all day and just found this.
If this is common knowledge, excuse my fault!  While catching up on many sites, and reading articles
on CGSociety, I was reading about Matte painting in the GI JOE movie.  On the second page is a
reference to Terragen use in cloud formations: http://features.cgsociety.org/story_custom.php?story_id=5249&referer=rss

-Enjoy.   -  Bill .

QuoteStarting from CG cloud vistas generated from the scenery generator software Terragen, we painted background clouds and foreground clouds. Much of the mid-ground clouds and extreme foreground clouds were created using fluid dynamics in Maya.

I am not sure to really understand. If they use Matte painting for background and foreground then Maya for mid-ground and extreme foreground, what did they use TG2 for ? starting with TG clouds and erasing them ?

That's what it sounds like to me.  They probably created a rough idea in Terragen what sort of formations and spacing they wanted and then painted over them after with more detail.

LOL!   Basically that's what it sounds like!  Start with a render and then blend the crap out of it.

All matte painting is basically just the process of blending a lot of different elements together, including rendered elements (often these days), hand-painted elements, and photographic elements. TG2 was one of those elements.

And yes, you beat me to posting this. I found out about it a couple days ago and it should be front page news by now. ;)

Did not mean to steal your thunder Oshyan!  :P   Much respect here.
Happy that I was able to bring this to our table though.

Has anybody seen this flick?  I have to be honest, since I did the whole media room, surround sound, set up,  I do not get out to see "new" movies very often.
I hope this was good. Did it hold up to Transformers?

I didn't see the last Transformers and didn't see this one.  Maybe see it when they come out on DVD...
