Title: Greely Pond
Post by: Henry Blewer on September 30, 2009, 10:19:41 PM
Just an old pasture which is becoming overgrown.

1024 x 480, detail 0.9, AA 6, GI settings at 3, supersample prepass, and GI surface details. Render time 9 hours.

I don't know how long you work on your scenes and if you move on quickly to something else, but if you want to keep on working on this one I might have a few suggestions (any way) :)

The soil could use some more detail and color as well as some little stones.
One thing which also caught my attention is that in most of your renders I have the idea that you don't use size-variation in your populations? Is that correct? The grasses look all the same size, it would be nice to see smaller ones. Normally I use size variations in a 1:2 to 1:3 ratio.

Actually the grasses are different sizes. I think I scaled them at 2 and 4. I was thinking about adding 'wheat' to them for dry grasses; scaled much larger. I do want to make the size variation of Walli's ferns larger. I also am not too happy with the walnut (white bark) trees, I think the leaves need more transparency.

Here is a test render of Greely Pond. It was rendered at 0.5 detail, with low atmosphere settings.

I just came back from work. I was rendering this scene again with Ryan's suggestions. I think I need more memory, the computer was frozen up. The event log said 'stack overflow' and that the swap file size was exceeded. I was rendering at 1680 x 1008, detail 0.9, GI detail 2, GI samples 4, AA 7, using one thread. I have 2 gigs of ram...
Windows Defender had an update. It usually does a scan right after updating. (Annoying program!) Maybe Defender had something to do with it?...  ???

I've dropped the terrain in this one. I'm using a new terrain called 'somewhere' now. I am working on object distribution using masks. This terrain was too flat.
