Title: a few cloud works (in progress)
Post by: FrankB on October 04, 2009, 12:51:32 PM
haven't had much time for making new images lately, but here are a few new clouds I'm working on. The following 3 images are just reseeded samples of the same cloud clip.
The terrain is just the untextured base terrain from the NWDA Default Project, but this is not the focus for the moment anyway.

Images have been touched up slightly, especially the color and contrast.

Very cool, I like the seed in the second one the best, it looks like the most natural forms.

The small details are what make them. The tiny wisps on the borders are something I've been trying to assimilate for a while.
Good clouds are not one of my strong points in Terragen.

Very sweetly done :) I like the third best myself.
Also the lighting shows off the default untextured terrain very well.

Two look very good as there is a good balance between the light internally and shadows throughout.

I also like the second one best. Something about fourth variation looks strange to me. I am not sure, but I think its the lighting/shading of the clouds.

New clouds 5 and 6 look the best to me. I don't see what you are trying to do. Are you changing the density and lighting?

These all look really cool!

Thanks.

I like the 2nd and 4th one best myself.
I'm not trying to get anywhere, I'm just experimenting. The differences between the 4 projects are really rather minimal. I am not changing the overall cloud shapes or general lighting, I'm just reseeding clouds and terrain, and tweaking here and there, slightly, carefully. I had a spark of an idea for these type of skies, and now I'm trying it out. In the past I never was truly content with these trade of cumulusses, but this time I've got them I think. It still helps to have a lucky seed, but this time 80% of seeds look acceptable, half of that good, and every third of these, kind of great - as far as my taste for skies is concerned.
I also think the fractal terrain works really well, I can't seem to convince myself yet to add anything to it ;)
Eventually, I may add some more detail in the form of fake stones, but not sure even if I want to try plants on it at this point.

I spent about three months on clouds, much of it with cirrus clouds. I found that just as with nature, lucky seeding and the right amount of wispy and base softening make the mundane sublime. Sometimes, depending on the sun angle above the horizon, changing the cloud density makes a huge difference. The lower the sun, the less dense the cloud. This seems to help the light look better on the back/shadow side of the clouds. I hope this helps.
