Title: On limiting populations.
Post by: Marlin on October 11, 2009, 05:45:06 PM
I'm a newcomer to TG2. Can some one help me with how to limit elevation and slope limiting when populating a landscape? I keep getting trees where I don't want them. Such as; in water and on the slopes of mountains where I don't want them. The limits on the shaders don't seem to be getting recognized.

How are you setting up your distribution limits? A node network screenshot or better yet a TGD scene file would be helpful. In brief, the correct method would be to check Use Density Shader near the bottom of the population settings, then click the button to the right with the +> select Create New Shader from the menu and navigate to Colour Shader -> Distribution Shader V4 in the submenu. This will create a distribution shader with slope and height controls in it. Once created, click the same button and select the top option "Go to Distribution Shader V4" to bring up its settings and begin adjusting to your needs.

I've been using the surface shader. I'll give that a try.

Well that didn't the trees still covered the Mtn.. I am using a .ter dem from the USGS files put together in 3DEM of Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Adams and Mt. Rainier. Trying to keep trees off Mt. St. Helens. No luck yet.

You'll need to post your TGD then, or at least a screenshot of your node setup. I'm not able to reproduce the problem otherwise.

In the process. I think I need photobucket or some such. How would I upload the TGD? I'm new to this sort of operation even though I started in the Terragen type back when the only thing was Vistapro..... ;D

To attach a file, start with a "Reply" as you have been doing and click "Additional Options..." that's on the lower-left of the reply form.  There you can find "Attach: Choose File".  There is some small print that explains the file types and maximum sizes.

Thanks.......

Here is the .tgd file.

The 'trees' layer you have is only for distribution as I can see, although you have coloured it green and have it connected to the main shader network.

This shouldn't be connected to the previous shaders, it's only for distribution but as it is just now, that layer is considered as having the snow, base colours, and also the terrain beneath it, you just want the data from it alone, not the previous shaders aswell.

Try this... [attachimg=#]

I don't have your terrain file or the objects set up but the 'trees' shader should now work as distribution when you open the edited project.

That did the trick. Thanks for the help.

I still have a lot of tweaking to do as well as downloading some more USGS DEMs for this project.

Here's a look
