Title: Coming Nightfall
Post by: rcallicotte on October 13, 2009, 09:06:02 AM

I used some models I purchased at Renderosity and used DandelO's Metaclouds to make dust, which might need more attention.  Suggestions and comments are welcome.  Only postwork was with Photomatix.

You have to BUY models from Renderosity!?!?!?  :o Then I'm NEVER going there! I like my downloaded models to be FREE!

lol. Me too, models are hideously overpriced.
Nice image Cal, maybe a dusty red desert setting would look cool and may give the clouds a more menacing contrast....maybe :D

just because you only get free models, that doesn´t mean that everyone else also just gets free models.
Actually I heard that there are still people left who are willing to pay others for their work ;-)

I am not sure about the "image ratio" - probably a more stretched variant would be more interesting to the eye. I think I would cut away the lower part of the picture and concentrate on the structures in the distant.

Thanks PG.  I'll consider the desert and the clouds.  I'm really not liking the little amount of dust my horses are kicking up.

Walli - Thanks for your comments.  I was trying to give a sense of perspective with the trees and horses in the foreground.  But, I can see where it's not convincing.  Maybe if I made the horses smaller and more compact.   The trees look flat, but I think that might be due to my lighting (a light behind the camera).

yes, the light behind the camera makes this hard to read. But probably it also helps to break up this tree "front"

I download my models from the Celestia Motherlode and convert them with Anim8or. Other models I make myself. And I'm pretty good with texture maps. Maybe you should change the horses to probes and put it all on Mars... (After removing the trees though :D) And for asteroids, I like to use rocks. I haven't tried spacecraft though, I'll have to try a Star Wars scene.

The trees and whatever they are (horses? dinos? smudges) don't add anything to the image at all, and you're right the dust does need more attention. At the moment it just obscures whatever is inside it.
If you crop the image halfways up you get a really good scene. The tower and buildings/compound and dramatic sky are really effective and go together very well.
I'd use this as the starting point of a new image.
