Title: Render Sharing + Improvements
Post by: GxMew on October 14, 2009, 01:40:06 PM
I have an idea that came to me a little while back when I asked someone to render something for me because it was too big to render in my computer...Well why don't we share our TGD's and see if anyone wants to render them for you...and then when they need something rendered then you render it for them...Also a plus to this would be that the TGD's could be revised and improved by the person rendering it...Kinda like a peer edit almost...Although to prevent someone from being a leech you would have to work out an agreement for example a render for a render...another interesting concept is if 10 people render a 1000x1000 slice of a TGD then we could make an amazing picture in half the time then doing it alone...so tell me what you think of it ^w^...

I think an open .tgd project would maybe be fun, someone just posts a random .tgd, just a basic fractal terrain and camera position and everyone does their own take on that scene. All from the same POV or something?
Each render would definately differ greatly from person to person. I think that'd be really cool.

Hmmm... I wonder if this could be a BOINC project (see   http://boinc.berkeley.edu/   )?

Wait can we? That's like the best render farm in the world XD...what are the requirements for it? if we can do it then I'm in...I am signing up for alpha testing...

Well, it would be easier solved if you just stopped the flashing.  I'd be fine with it in just a normal icon... flashing, especially rapidly quick extreme flashing is where it gets annoying.

So youd like to have an image that pretty much everyone hates/blocks...?

and i like seeing other peoples avatars usually, don't feel like blocking all of them.

Pretty much...there is no rule for flashing avatars...so I am going to exorcise that right...

On the subject of a BOINC project for TG2 rendering, I suggested this a few months ago but haven't heard any official word from Planetside. It has received substantial support though. I'm conducting some experiments with CUDA and talking to nVidia to see how useful GPU rendering would be to TG2 rendering. They seem to think it'd be fine as several companies and universities already do it but he's getting back to me on how well it could handle fractals.

Sweet mother of god if we could get these companies to help us we can create amazing collaborative renders in a fraction of the time it would take alone...just imagine a 10,000x6,600 render at 10 AA 1.2 quality in a day o.o my god my heart just jumped...

And, just imagine a Terragen itself that could also do that. :D

huh? you can do 1.2 quality on Terragen...Okay yea not that resolution...then whats the max that Terragen can go too?

TG2 is "only" limited by your resources. It's limited by 32bit for now, so beyond 10,000 x 10,000 would cause crashes. But for single images the jobs would be split into crops. My support and development guy at nvidia is looking into the most efficient way of doing it but he reckons that a multi-pass system would be better than a traditional scanline implementation of doing it on a pixel by pixel basis which is what GPUs are used to. So a day may be a bit of a stretch for something like that unless everyone's got GTX 295s in quad SLI ;D

1.2 would be no problem. Yes, it's the resolution I was more thinking of.
I don't know, though, what's the largest render to have been succesful in TG2? Anyone...

It would take a lot of development to support CUDA or any GPU-based rendering approach. Not likely to happen any time soon.

Dune, there are many thinks i want to say about this avatar of GxMew but from his replys i get the feeling he would not care.
İ don't like to use a software because of somebody. But now i don't see it thanks to Neuspadrin's advice.
This is not one of the importing thinks in my life to be angry. He can look at his own avatar as long as he likes. An artist want to show his art....

Anyway...

Wetbanana, i think it is not worth it. İ have a feeling he likes what you and the others trying to say. He is making this intentionally. There are every kind of people here.
Then it becomes a flame war. Make your nice pictures. He can make his flashing things. From now on i will not comment about this. Who cares.

some points - my opinion.
1)  he doesn't care
2)  he probably does not see his own flashing avatar
3)  he likes to intentionally piss people off - that is his only purpose for this
4)  such a person can do a lot of damage to site like this if he wishes to continue to attack
5)  I should not have responded to this as it is like an email chain where everyone replies "please remove me from the list"
6)  His little social engineering game certainly put me in a mood today.
7)  I'd call him an asshole, but I would not wish to be insulting to assholes.

lol your still going on at that me priating software hehe used to i admit that but I bought terragen back at 1.63 build and just because you have more "deviant friends" doesnt mean your a better artist mate.

yeah I do realise terragen is fractal dumbass i have been using it for nearly three years i think i know it a lot better then you i was meaning your fractal flames that aint art man was their any thought behind them or was it just radom seeds and doing abit of tweaking in photoshop.

lol start pissing people off when you have the communitys respect brutha not when your a noob ;D

Hi everyone,

You can turn off display of avatars by clicking on your name in a post you've made, going to the Look and Layout Preferences and checking "Don't show users' avatars". I will also be in touch with GxMew directly.
