Title: Project WIP
Post by: MGebhart on October 28, 2009, 08:02:12 PM
Now that I have a fair grasp on Terragen 2, I thought I would start a serious project. It's snowing like crazy here in Colorado so, I might be indoors a few days.

All suggestions are welcome. I know that I need to pop-up the cloud samples and a couple other things.

I think the image needs to be larger. The canyon walls are one color. The canyon walls can be changed by adding power fractals into a redirect shader. The power fractals can also add more color.
It's a very good image otherwise. I like the eagle flying overhead. 8)

njeneb,

I am 10+ hours into a higher-res render (1280x728) and I got an ERROR. The error is in a render thread. Not sure what that is but, it may be due to a lack of resources. It's still rendering but, there is a black square in an odd place. See image.

I had tried the multi-color suggestion before rendering but couldn't figure it out. Thanks for the tip. I'll try and get it working after a few cups of coffee.

It looks like a thread was dropped. When this render is done, do a crop render of that area. Then you can merge the two using a paint program.

MGebhart , maybe there are such places but it looks like the trees are too big.

Kadri.

You may be right.

This is just a Work In Progress so, I'm taking suggestions to enhance the realism.

Thanks for you input.

Agree with Kadri - the trees would be better smaller.

Here is a revision of my WIP.

Again, all suggestions are welcome.

The final will be rendered at a higher res.

The change of tree size has definitely helped the sense of scale. To me, the colours of the strata seem a bit too vivid - perhaps tone them down so they don't contrast so strongly?

I have used very vivid coloring, then used a power fractal across the whole surface (medium grey works well) to tone down the color, and add some more displacement.

Both great suggestions.

Well, I'm off to try it out.

Thanks,

Your strata colours look bery evenly spaced across the whole scene rather than appearing to be closer together in the distance.  I assume that you are using a stripy image with Through Camera projection to generate them.  If I am right you can fix this by using a planer projection for the image instead.  You might need to fiddle around with the positioning and scale of the image to get the right effect but the resulting strata will have a more natural appearance.

I large scale power fractal with the scale compressed in the Y direction may work even better.

Nice scene by the way.

You should use a Strata and Outcrops shader. ;)

Mr. L

I noticed the problem too. I'll have some free time tomorrow so I'll play with it.

BlackHole,

Will do, thanks.
