Title: All-around view?
Post by: Anthony Appleyard on November 11, 2009, 11:48:46 AM
Can any version of Terragen render the whole scene top and bottom and all around into a big image that in Poser could be texture-mapped into the inside of a big sphere surrounding the scene?

So-called "Environment Maps", spherical panoramas, etc. can be created in TG2 but it's a manual process - you need to render out each of the multiple views needed, then stitch them together into an environment map using a 3rd party application.

Uhhh. Is there any chance of asking Terragen's writers to implement a means to output an environment sphere? Someone made a Poser environment sphere whose texture map is an image 2n wide and n high; horizontal = azimuth, vertical = altitude, the horizontal midline is the horizontal plane.

I work for Planetside. ;)

This is a frequent feature request, and one which we do intend to implement in the future. But there is no specific timeframe for it. In the meantime there are manual ways to do it.

Anthony, please keep in mind that Planetside has just two programmers. There are many features they want to include.

If you render six images of the cube around the camera, there is a way to make the sphere map in Blender. One of the books I bought about Blender explained this, but it's in storage... There may be a link from the Blender.org site or in BlenderNation.

"In the meantime there are manual ways to do it" -- please is there any chance of a full tutorial telling how to make the necessary images and convert them into am environment sphere?

Messages #5 and #6 "crossed in the post". If I make images in the six directions, I could make in Poser an "environment cube" instead of a sphere; but how (in the original Terragen) can I set the camera so that the edges of the image are all exactly 45 degrees of view angle away from the middle of the image? Make the image square, obviously; but what should I set the Zoom / Magnification to?

There is a tutorial for this and Terragen 2:

It may be somewhat outdated, but should work.

The zoom factor you need in Terragen Classic is exactly 1.
