Title: NWDA Default Project V2
Post by: FrankB on November 16, 2009, 05:19:08 PM
an example from the upcoming NWDA Default Project in its second incarnation, with kind permission from Matt to embed his altocumulus setup, replacing the original one.

the scene shows alto and cumulus together.

Regards,
Frank

are there lines in the sky ? in the middle ? it looks like the lines we can have on water sometimes without microvertex jittering

oh thanks Franck, you spoiled my immaculate opening ;)

I see what you mean, I believe it's coincidence. And also it's pretty much... tiny?

Cheers,
Frank

FrankB as a showcase i have nothing to say.
Bu it will sound like i am ungrateful(?) ...how should i say...it is like there is too much going on in the image.
I don't know if this makes sense what i say...

I like the clouds, but the alto's seem to over power the image. Don't change it. I have seen the same type of cloud cover in reality. Let the user make whatever changes they like.

I saw the lines right away too. I agree, try Microvertex Jitter? Also I think the altocumulus does make it look a bit busy and darken the lighting quite a lot, but perhaps you can do a blend with a large-scale Power Fractal and make it a bit more patchy and less dominant.

Hi,

you shouldn't look at this from an artistic standpoint. Its just a sky covered by clouds, just like it happens most often with altocumulus, many of which come in large patches. If you are planning to use this type of cloud, but want to make a smaller and well placed patch somewhere, that's easy to do, too. Apart from all that, I think the sky looks pretty close to the real thing, which is why I was happy to be allowed to replace it with my previous altocumulus setup. Which wasn't bad, but not as good as this one.

The shadows from the clouds might appear a little dark here, but actually the GI light contribution from the sky was pretty good, it's just that the image you're seeing has been postworked to a higher contrast (which then darkened the ground more).

I've tried a sunset scene with these clouds last night. That too can give interesting result. Maybe I will post that experiement here later as well.
Cheers,
Frank
