just a quick one --- what size terrain are being used
2049 seem to render quite quick on my computer
also are members using 4097 terrains to get better quality overhangs etc
thanXX ;D
Hi doneydonydone,
in my humble opinion there is no real need to use a 4096²-terrain unless using a DEM (for highest reality).
TGTP is adding (if wished) with the heightfieldshader fractal detail to any loaded .ter
As soon as you are displacements for overhangs and so on, the detail is only limited by the smallest-scale in the fractal shader.

I mostly use procedurals these days and they're of theoretically "infinite" detail, so the size question is no longer really relevant. When I do use heightfields I seldom go over 2049. As Volker said there is procedural detail added even to heightfields (optionally) and they tend to look great in TG2, especially with the addition of procedural displacement in surface layers and rocks, vegetation, and other objects. At a certain point the underlying terrain detail no longer matters all that much. There are still a few cases where higher resolution terrains are useful though, and it's really hard to beat the 3m DEM's that exist for some parts of the US. ;D
