Post by: matrix2003 on December 16, 2009, 09:14:47 PM
Yes or No  ?
" first render in the oven, now ..."

*edit:  ooohhh...   nevermind.  ;D

DoF didn't make it into the final 2.1 release, it still needs some significant fixes and tuning. But it's in development for some point in the future at least.

Well it just looks so much better, distant mountains seem richer.  More epic.

edit*    I meant to say my new T2.1 test renders look much richer.

BUT!... very often DOF is used incorrectly. For epic landscapes, captured with a virtual wide angle lens, there should be no DOF unless you position something directly in front of the camera. There are lots of images accidentally looking like miniatures because there is DOF where it shouldn't be.

Good point.

Just give us an "RGB" + "Alpha" + "Z Buffer" output images on every render so we can easily Photoshop DOF. It's a simple but effective workaround and still - I think that it will be widely used because true DOF is dramatically render intensive (or maybe it won't be, hm?).

+1

It's the best way to do DOF even in (other) high end apps that have this feature built in. In general, 9 times out of ten, it's best to do in post everything that can be done in post. You 'll be saving TONS of time, while gaining TONS of flexibility.

Fully agree on Z-Depth. There's some really nice camera lens plugins out there, especially considering any changes a client/producer/DOP require, which would mean re-rendering a whole sequence if dof was baked into the image. It also gives you great flexibility in post masking too.

I agree with nixx and would like to request some kind of multi-pass facility similar to what Vue has where images can be output as a many layered .psd file, either as still or as a sequence from an animation. Vue allows an almost infinite amount of choice as to what you want included in it's multi pass output, and as multipass it the industry standard as near as I can tell from the big animators and their compositing work in Pro films etc. I think it's time TG2 stepped up to this particular plate...just my 2 cents

All TG2 needs is the Z-Depth pass. You already have the RGB and Alpha in your temp folder.

Have you checked the list of things that can appear in the .psd multipass output from Vue Thelby...gotta be 30 options.. ...

We were talking about Depth Of Field. At least that's what it appeared that this thread started on. Am I wrong ???
In Light of DOF, all that is needed for Accurate DOF is Z-Depth, because I can do Depth Of Field in photoshop with no Z-Depth. It is just a bit less accurate!!!

If i am not wrong, he mean that for more control of the render there has to be more layers. Multipass...
But for DOF i think only Z-Depth data is enough . However with alpha pass and so you can control it better .

Sorry Thelby, I sorta hijacked that part of the thread with a wish...you are correct that all you need is as you stated...I just think for those with slower computers, miltipass would solve a lot of bottlenecks with rendertime/quality output....still adjusting to no cigarettes and no teeth so am  tad self obsessed these last 7 or 8 days.. ...
