I am in the middle of a render project right now and am in need of some help, I have started too play with populations and am working on a conifer forest type scene. I have several gaps in the population that would be most suited to a ground cover of dried fallen pine needles, for realism. The gaps are mid to foreground so the resolution of the model would have to accommodate close up inspection.
The model should include (If Possible) freshly fallen (Still green) needles, needles that are starting to brown and fully brown as to appear natural. I looked in the File Shearing section and also did a search, hence the request. I have no capability to do any of this my self.
Others may find such a thing useful also. Full credit would be given to you for your work as always. ;D
Thank you to whom ever can provide help in this regard.
Regards to you.

Didn't Walli come up with something like that over at NWDA? I seem to remember Frank showing something like that off in the image gallery.
Have you also thought about using an image texture instead, with a little displacment? I used one in my Gloucestishire image a while back, which seemed to work. You could even use two different tiles of texture, then use a PF to dictate which is shown in the white, and what in the black, to break up any tiling.
NWDA has a groundcover pack, but not really fallen pine needles. some of it did look like pine needles a bit if i recall correctly.
indeed we don't have pine needles, but the groundstuff and dirt pack does give nice results.
Here's one render: http://forums.planetside.co.uk/index.php?topic=7550.msg80557#msg80557

Cheers,

I saw your post and sat down and knocked out a quick example. Please note it took me about 15 min to do this so, it's kinda lame.
The object contains a couple pine needle images, 2 cones and one small branch.
It will take some time to do one that is convincing. I will try to come up with one that will have a good variety of pine stuff and rather dense.
Anyway, thought I would give it a shot. I could use them too.

Hi that sound like a plan, I have the image rendering right now, what I decided to do was add a second surface layer to tone down the first, as the gaps without populations are quite small, I was looking for those dense mats (That what those dense coverings of fallen needles are called) of fallen needles like in this http://oohshinyart.files.wordpress.com/2009/08/232-aug-20-woods.jpg image, for visual realism, hence the request.
Look up "Fallen Pine Needles" on Google Images for reference, when your start you project, like I stated in my original post the model I am requesting would be used in the mid-ground and foreground of the image. I like the idea of having cones, I'd request though for usability that they be separate form the needles so they are optional for use, if required (Up to you mind).
Look forward to seeing what you come up with. ;D
Regards to you.
Cyber-Ange;
To me, those cones look more like turds. :P
I have been thinking of how to model this using Blender for a couple of days. Making a 'patch' of needles and cones is easy. Making them seamless... That's what is taking so much thought.
It may be possible to use image maps. One color and the second the bump information. Images are easier to make seamless. The pine cones can be modeled.
Here is a Pine Cone I came up with last night. It may be a bit heavy on the face count so, give it a try and let me know.
If it works out I will make textures for it.
I'll work on dead pine needles, small branches and bark chunks today.
The tgo file is under the images.

how about this :)
cyphyr,
Excellent. Are they 3d objects or image map?
Marc
These needles look great!
They are individual 3d pine needles, two needles per model. Three populations (one of each model) at 0.04 object spacing with a distance shader masking it all out at 4m.
All the files are in the rar, enjoy. I'll upload to the file sharing later.
:)

Here is a web site with images of Dried Dead Plants.

Those are some really cool needles. Should come in real handy, Thanks a Bunch!!!!!

Hi,
I just downloaded your .rar file and shall take a look when I can, thank you. ;D
Regards to you.

Although it's really winter here (with snow and all), it looks like fall with all these vegetative debris falling from the skies. Very handy, thanks a lot!
