Title: Foothills - V3
Post by: Gannaingh on December 22, 2009, 05:48:23 PM
This is my first go at a render with the new 2.1 build. There is definately a noticable improvement when rendering large populations. But alas, the water could use some work. Enjoy  :)

Sweet work, the populations look very very good ;D

What settings did you use regarding AA, filter-type etc.?

Don't have to mention anything about the water I see :)

Cheers,
Martin

Wow, that looks really great. Very calm and peaceful. I like the ground texture. Maybe the wave scale is a little bit too large?!

Thanks for the replies!

@TU: I used an AA 8 with the Narrow Cubis filter and raytraced objects clicked on with the default settings.

@Hannes: That could be it, I'll do some crop renders to see if it makes much of a difference; thanks for the suggestion.

@ ndeewolfwood: The trees are Klas' Oak trees (IMO they are easily in the top 3 most useful/highest quality trees available) and should still be available for download on his website.

That is stunning.  Am mad jealous - but it's also inspiring.  Wonderful work - tremedous detail from the trees to the shoreline.  Love it!

Great image, Darthvader1! And very nice light. I agree about the latest build, absolutely fantastic job they did.

Gorgeous render. Yep, smaller scale waves should do it. The other thing I noticed that could improve the scene is to use one or two more species of tree in the mix (if your hardwear will allow).

Wow thats a most excellent render you've got there. Well done!

Finally an update! I've added another population of trees, decreased the wave scale, made the water smoother and clearer, and added a subtle mountain way off yonder in the distance.

Damn man, this looks near photorealistic ;D
What were your render-settings this time? Always useful to know.

You might try to add some extra stuff to the surface like fake stones and grasses (only foreground portion).
The different tree-species look good together. However, you might try to make clumps or streaks of different trees so they are more grouped. That's what you often see in nature.

I really like this work, very atmospheric too.
Keep m coming :)

Cheers,
Martin

Thanks TU! I do want to add more pines in there; probably another population with really clumped distribution. I actually do have a population of bushes down along the shore, I will just have to raise the trees' minimum altitude to make the more noticable. My render settings were:

Detail: .9
AA: 8, Narrow Cubic, Ray-Trace Objects On with default settings
GI: 2/2

For me the POV is the greatest improvement here, funnily enough. The trees on the left in the foreground aren't cut off but lead the eye up the slope to the background plus on the right there are less empty spaces visible. Will be interesting to watch how this develops :)

Excellent work - great surfacing on the cliffs, and the haze works well.

New version! I have made a few changes, most noticably to the terrain in the forground and I've worked on adding some stones to the shore. The mountain has also been changed and I think it looks much better in this version. That said, I accidentally changed the cloud seed so that part of the image could use some work to get it back up to standard. Also I think i will decrease the coverage of the trees to try and get more of an open feel to the landscape.

As a young kid, my Dad took me fishing in northern Minnesota - this scene reminds me of that time. Early morning fog while sitting in a rowboat listening to the cry of the Loons ...fantastic work here!
