It's been a while since I've posted anything and I wanted to give the new build a try :)
Some of you may recognize this scene. It an older one of mine that I wanted to make some improvements for. The whole atmosphere is changed and I have worked some with the terrain. I was not very happy with the way the mountain looked before so that was my main focus.
I think it looks better. It kinda looks a little bigger and has a little more "alpine look" now.
The name is just something I made up. It's not a real mountain or anything like that, but the terrain is based on a "Mount Adams" heightfield.
Anyway... I wanted the name to have a meaning as well, so 10 point to the one that can figure out what it means ;)
Hope you like it.
Regards,
Terje
"Mountain of the gods" i think ? Without internet it would be much harder...but then we wouldn't be here :)
Anyway this image has a refreshing feeling to me. You can use it in freshwater commercials and so (no sarcasm) .
It is really good.I think only some of the ground (left) and a little more variation in the trees could be better.
Kadri.
Thank you Kadri.
I agree with you on the ground to the left. I was not to happy with that. Maybe I'll change it later some time.
And yes. "Mountain of the gods" is correct. 10 points to you ;)
Regards,
Terje
I think the left side could be improved by adding a population of some brush of some sort. The tree line seems too sharp. Everything else looks very good. Nice work.
Fantastic water. Agree that the trees need some work - vary sizes, break up the tree line. Also maybe a grass layer underneath them. But the overall composition is very nice.
Very nice work here. I like the mood, atmo and lighting. Nice background mountain as well.

Definitely agree. Besides that I also really think you should reduce scale-size of the trees by half. Then triple the density at least, because they're too spaced.
Maybe you could also add some extra elements to the surfacing like rocks etc.
Martin
Great job! I agree with Martin's comments, but this is already a pretty great scene.
Super work I love the lighting!
I would also mask out the cloud that hangs over the mountain top with a paint shader it sort of reduces the sense of scale of the mountain. and agree with what martin said smaller trees and heaps more of them!
Thanks guys. They are all great ideas and I want to give them a try.
I'll post an update when it's ready, but it will probably take some time. Tomorrow it's back to the real work again :(
Regards,
Terje
Very good render, Terje, especially on the lighting, POV and the snow coverage!
Frank
Love the symmetry and the lighting - the snow is excellent too - love this!
Very good! This reminded me of some Vista (R.I.P.) backgrounds :)
agree with Eoin!
The lighting and the mountain are really very nice!!!
What a wonderful point of view, and the lighting seems perfect. Beautiful work, Terje.
Ah, that was what I was thinking about...

Hehe. Tanks guys :)
I've started working on a update. It will still take some time before it's ready, but I'll post it here as soon as it's done.
MacGyver - Do you know where that is in the picture you have posted?
Regards,
Terje
WOW!!!! :o
Stunning!!!

I remember reading it around 2006 when Vista came out but I forgot... perhaps someone around here has an idea?
... and that vitsa image looks a lot like the the render from Saurav, made a while back :)

I want to do this, but I really don't know how ???
I don't understand what to do and where to begin. If someone could explain me how to mask out that cloud over the mountain I will do it :)

The easiest way would just be to use a distance shader. Just copy and past some coordinates from the top of your mountain, make a new camera at that location and then use that as the base camera for a distance shader the eliminates the cloud within a desired radius around the mountain.
Or you could create a paint shader and pain the area you do not want clouds to be in and then use that as an inverse blend shader for you cloud layer.
I hope that makes sense :)
What is unique in the photograph is a more rigid terrain verses Saurav's softer ridges, also in the photo with hints of strata and deep cut erosion as well.
Thank you darthvader1.
I used the "Paint Shader" and got rid of the cloud. I've tried this before on other scenes, but never figured out how to find the right spot. In this scene it was not very hard cause of the easily recognizable mountain :)

Terje

Hi Terje,
I'd strongly recommend to read this:
http://www.nwdanet.com/tech-articles/8-distance-shader-magic.html (http://www.nwdanet.com/tech-articles/8-distance-shader-magic.html)
Distance shaders and combinations of them are really powerful masking tools :)
If you need any help just let me know.
Martin
Thank you Martin. I've never seen that before.
I can see it's a very powerful tool and I will probably use it many times in the future ;)
Regards,
Terje
So here's an update :)
All tho it's mostly better without the cloud over the mountain, I have noticed that the cloud that used to be there also gave the mountain a extra yellow light in the shadows which was very nice so don't be surprised if the cloud returns ::)
Anyway. I hope the rest is an improvement.
Regards,
Terje
Here's another version.
I found this cool script for GIMP that allows me to tone image's areas into two different colors. It's almost like a black & white image.
Regards,
Terje
lovely reflection !!!
I like the tone map version. You can also use Blender to do compositing and image manipulation.
Thank you guys.

Blender is looking really interesting these days ;)
When I have the time I will test out Blender.

Terje
I have been using it more and more for things other than 3D modeling.
Great update and nice b/w version! :)
No offense to anyone, I personally also liked the cloud over the central mountain ;)
I prefer the newest render (the fully colour one). The toned one is nice - poster art; but the colour one just brings out the wonderful subtleties in the lighting.
I have updated the image a little and thought I might share it. I now consider it as finished and hope you like it.
You can find it here (http://img684.imageshack.us/i/mountsuradri01d.jpg/) at 5000 x 2179.

Holy Huge Image Batman! This is well worth the render time.
Thank you njeneb :)

I agree, very nice as well as large.
On a personal note I miss the cloud in the center but I guess that's more than compensated by the overall quality of the image. :)
