Title: river gorge
Post by: folder on January 04, 2010, 10:00:08 PM
this image is made using TU's canyon preset. I played around a bit with some settings added a sand layer. i think it needs some bushes, and rocks and  a dust layer. took quite a while to render, had it set at 1. I really recommend this pack, and not just for the canyon information. if you analyse the info carefully, it is applicable to much more than canyons.  anyway all C&C welcome.

David, you've done well with Martin's preset file. Many possibilities here. I like the ability to move either side of the canyon walls; or, create someting just using just one wall. I've got one in the oven now; and, will try another in a 'portrait' format hopefully finding a good point of view for a close up. I'd like to create one using dandelO's procedural night sky if I can get some 'fill lights' to yield enough details. I think a moon lighted sky and canyon would look great.

great idea about the night scenes and moon.  think what canyonland and arches scences we could try to recreate or new ones when the "Arch" technique is released. here is a link to mesa college geology field trip http://www.physci.mc.maricopa.edu/Geology/FieldTrips/ColoradoRiver/2004Summer/ColoradoRiver_su04_Images_Day01.htm
I have been using it for inspiration and want to see if I can recreate some of the strata
thanks for the kind comments

You're welcome. From the late seventies through the late eighties, I've spent a lot of time hiking through many areas of the CanyonLands; and, would love to move here. When Terragen came along, it was a natural for recreating these fantastic terrains. If you ever get the chance to read 'Desert Solitaire' by Edward Abbey, do so - you'll enjoy this real life adventure in these areas.

I like the light you've created in the canyon. Just one thing - there's a small error near the bottom right.

I have been looking at this one for a couple days. There is not anything I can suggest to make it better. Great render!

Everyone

thanks so much for your comments.

Domlib - thanks for the lighting comment. and i do see the error, by the time i had noticed it, it had been rendering for so long i just said ok and let it go

Njeneb - really appreciate your comment as I have learned so much from your renders and the files you sent me. but a lot of the credit has to go to TU. This preset of his is really great. still working on a close view of the scene and one with some foilage in it

There are a lot of people here who have helped me also. My Father would have been so surprised that I actually listen! ;D

Hi David,

Very nice to see my canyon-pack in action.
The reason why this probably took so long is the addition of water. I tried it too and it is really time consuming. Also the soft-shadows are really time-consuming. I regret I enabled that setting as default of the setup.

About the water: did you change the size of the lake object? I always set up the edge of the water-plane as close as possible to the camera (thus with centre in front of camera) and then use as small radius of the object as possible/I need. If you use the default size, which is huge, TG2 will render the water surface all over the place before rendering the terrain, this costs a lot of extra time.

The addition of rocks and bushes is a really good idea. If you want I can help you with adding those rocks. Just send me the tgd you're working on at that moment and a clip of your stones and I'll integrate it for you. It needs a small trick to work properly.

There's a small render-artifact in your render to the lower left. Any idea what causes this? Hopefully it is not my default setup. Haven't seen those in ages by the way! :)

Cool link, thanks for sharing here.
There are some interesting strata-patterns here. I think I might be able to get results reasonably similar to these:

(strata patterns similar to these are often seen in TG2 renders...look at InkyDigit's work for example)

Anyhow, when looking at these I get inspired and get ideas of how I could achieve similar effects, so again thanks for sharing :)

Cheers,
Martin
